Bullshit! **UPDATED**

John has a great rundown on the new San Francisco carry law. Go read the whole thing. Here’s the bottom line:

The cost for the permit, the fingerprinting, the psychological test, and the firearms testing and qualification test is $2,607 for first time applicants and there is no refund of any of it if they deny you anywhere in the process.

I don’t think I dropped 2 grand on my first gun total kit including all the Massachusetts permitting hoops, as well as my club membership as well as first-time member dues, a used 1911, cleaning kit, safety gear and a half-case of cheap .45 ACP ammo…tho it was a bit close as I do the math in my head.

Furthermore its restricted to guns by certain manufacturers, no cocked-and-locked carry (seriously? Idiots!) and the guns MUST be in .45 ACP, .40 S&W, 9x19mm, or .38 Special. So that can close a LOT of doors. No .380 Auto pocket guns, no 1911s, nothing by certain companies that make more affordable guns like Bersa, or Charter Arms, or Kel-Tec. They have the dumb restrictions on what GLOCK trigger pack you must use (but say nothing about say a Kahr or S&W or XD trigger….tho I wonder if they consider guns like the Walther PPS or the Springfield XD “Cocked and Locked” guns).

Further for the range qualification the qual needs to be done on EACH of the guns you want to carry with. So if for me my S&W1911Sc is verboten so I’d have to switch to a Kahr TP45, and I’d also have to re-qualify with my S&W642. No word if say Jay’s Snubbie would be out because its chambered in .357 Magnum, or if he’d just be required to stoke the charge-holes with .38s…same could be said about the Ruger SP101 which is a nice little carry gun, but its a .357, can you carry it with .38s or do you need to get a gun that can only feed .38s?) Also I’ve occasionally carried my wifes S&W638, its a different gun that the 642, but only in the hammer style, and frankly in running of the gun the two are identical, would I need to run the course again?

Furthermore they make you shoot on the SF LE Silhouette target which by this catalogue measures 33″ tall and 18″ wide, and they make you reach out to 25 yards. How many defensive pistol shootings happen at 25 yards? I’m sure there are a few out there, but honestly I’m betting those instances are at hens teeth level of rarity, even if you open up the sample to include law enforcement shootings.

Another thing I noticed was they talk about a “Snapped or locked holster”, meaning they further require your holster to have a retention device. Not sure if the holster also needs to be on the qualifier, certainly the DeSantis Nemesis I carry my J-Frame in won’t count for the test, so my pocket carry might be illegal, or at least I’d need to buy some sort of retention holster JUST to qualify the gun. I’ll also note that I carry my 1911 in a Glaco Miami Classic II shoulder holster which does have a thumb-break strap on it, but I can’t get that rig for the TP45, not sure if anybody makes a good shoulder rig for the TP45…

Not sure what costs are one-time-only, and what must be forked over for each running of the test. But let’s drop the $2600 for a one-time permit issuance, then factor in a $50 Retention holster, and $600 for a TP45, or similar qualifying gun, we’re looking at $3250, and that’s NOT counting club membership or range fees, as well as ammo, safety gear, cleaning kits, storage devices et al, and You aren’t going to be able to drive from the gun shop to the range and expect to score many hits on target drawing from a retention holster at 25 yards.

John’s point is correct, they’re being forced by the courts to allow for Carry permits for residents dumb enough to live in San Francisco, so they made a system so onerous and expensive only the most wealthy and dedicated shooters will even BOTHER to START the process let alone complete it. Furthermore what if you’re a shooter of modest experience and you’ve decided you want to start carrying in San Francisco, you log your range time and take your classes et al, but when you get to the range on test day you get a case of the jitters and score a few misses at the 25 yard target. Try again, buddy and put another dollar in! Maybe you’re now tapped out in cash because you just blew your emergency rent money on the course and gun, or maybe you just give up.

That’s the point. Meanwhile in AMERICA people can live in states where permits aren’t required for carry (some for all carry, others for open carry only) furthermore there are plenty of states who just want to see an application and a check for their troubles, and don’t require you to do any mandatory training. In all these places there are NO statistical differences between states that do this anal-probe bullshit to all applicants.

Furthermore does the SFPD have to run a course of fire like this, and are they restricted to only guns on that list? Are you telling me there are no detectives that carry a pocket .380 in a pocket holster or a deep concealment holster without retention? Not that qualifications matter to SFPD.

San Francisco is PUNISHING you for wanting to exercise your 2nd Amendment rights. Remember that!

**UPDATE** Have a look at this comment from Brandon Combs of Calguns, he gives the breakdown of the fees. Like the Qualification test that costs $1,722, and that does NOT include ammo fees! Still more egregious is “Psychological assessment” and “$1Million insurance”. Disgusting.

Furthermore this is for a ONE YEAR permit! It seems they’re playing the same game Massachusetts does with their non-resident permits. Here in Mass you can’t get a carry permit if you live in some towns, you can in others. If you live out of state tho, the permitting system is essentially “Shall Issue” (the same “May issue” rules apply but when the issuing body is the Massachusetts state police they don’t bother to harass the lawful) still the permit needs to be applied for in person in Chelsea Mass which is not one of the best areas of the state, requires the same training class, $100 fee, and photographing and fingerprinting, and it is good for ONE YEAR!

For those of you who carry think of how many non-resident permits you have. Now think of how it would change the way you live and carry if they needed to be applied for and renewed in person, and were only valid for 1 year.

Needless to say Mass has VERY few Non-resident permit holders. That’s the whole point!

Sweet!

Was sitting in the doctor’s office after getting my shot (I’m required to stick around for a half hour after the injection to make sure I don’t catch an acute case of death), and I felt a powerful hankering for some oldschool text adventures. What did I find?

Hitchhiker’s Guide to the Galaxy

Yeah, that’s EXACTLY what I needed!

“Gun Death” Stabbing

A simplebut to the point one.

Coroner Vicki DeGeus-Morris tells the Idaho Press-Tribune that Jaremy Allen McCane died in the front yard of a residence early Saturday after being stabbed at least once.

Give somebody a piece of steel and a rock and they can build a primitive knife in almost no time. Of course you can make knives out of stone, or other materials too.

Think restricting tools will accomplish ANYTHING?

How Gun Control Works Pt II

So I’m going to expand on this post I wrote this morning.

The anti-rights people are always saying when we roll back some of their miserable and illegal laws that there will be “blood in the streets”. Well there is blood in the streets…only its the streets with the most gun control and gang presence.

Of course the anti-rights zealots, not to allow facts to dominate the discussion quickly point out that every anti-gun state has a nearby state that has less restrictive laws, and if only we could just enact laws in THOSE states then we could curb “Gun Death”.

Well first it doesn’t make a lick of sense, as if the violent criminals are going into New Hampshire to buy “less restricted” guns to bring back to Boston…why don’t they commit crimes in New Hampshire too? I mean they’re THERE, and people in New Hampshire have money and valuable stuff, right? Actually they probably have MORE money because they aren’t taxed every time they blink like those of us behind the “Progressive” Iron Curtain.

Well it doesn’t make sense because it isn’t true! (PDF…and thanks Wally for sending this to me!)

So Scroll to page 6. Look where the guns come from. The vast majority of guns found at crimes, or on criminals in Massachusetts come from….MASSACHUSETTS!

But the anti-rights fools will whine further and point out that the other states add up too! Well they kinda don’t when you look at the percentage that Gun-Control Haven, Massachusetts supplies, still I’ll bite. Scroll to page 7.

Time-to-crime. Look at that spike at the end. “Over 3 Years”. If criminals are buying guns from corrupt dealers or straw sales, why would they sit on the gun for 3 years?

Easy they don’t. The guns are mostly stolen from lawful people. You can’t stop that. If Thieves can get passed a guarded secured museum to steal priceless art, how will you ensure your gun will NEVER be stolen? You can’t.

One last amusing tid-bit. Look at where the guns are recovered on page 8, and cross-reference it with this list of how restricted the towns are.

Gun control, not only does it not work, it causes EXACTLY what it aims to prevent.

If you like violent crime, you LOVE gun control!

Product Review: CRKT Ultima

A few months ago I picked up a CRKT Ultima a Knifecenter.com FYI if you’re interested in this unit, its discontinued, tho they still make the smaller size.

I talked about it here on how little I used it, and what a shame that was.

Well then we got a new dehumidifier which came in a big heavy double-walled cardboard box. I decided to hack up that box and Damn the big heavy blade with a razor sharp edge worked like a charm. So when Vector got his daughter a swing set and had a HUGE collection of big sturdy shipping boxes in his basement I decided to haul over my Ultima and give it a go.

OK so for transporting it I stuck it in the provided sheath. OK CRKT, here’s my big complaint. You made a nice fighting/survival knife, and then you go and ship it with this huge ninja-bait dropleg sheath. The knife is big, its HUGE in this bulky thing. You couldn’t have just made a simple belt sheath?

OK so onto the knife. There was a ton of cardboard and over the course of the cutting the blade held up well. It was showing signs of dullness towards the end. This wasn’t unreasonable, but it did seem a might sooner than other utility knives I use. I’ve heard this is on account of the Ultima using softer steel to better resist chipping and breaking under heavy use. Still softer steel means shorter edge life, but quicker sharpening. When I got home I slapped it on a ceramic stone a few times and it quickly returned to a razor’s edge. I imagine in the field if you had a piece of steel or the back of another knife you could probably strop a reasonable edge back with little effort.

Now the handle is bit of wonder there. It feels VERY comfortable when holding it, but the moment the knife starts to slide out of your hand it digs in and you get your grip back VERY aggressively. Overall this is comfortable both physically and in your confidence in your grip. Tho by the end of the session my hand was a bit raw. This is definitely a hard-use knife, not a hobby knife. This is the type of knife I wouldn’t mind using around the camp fire or on the deck of a rolling boat, but not something I’d want to use all day cutting brush as I imagine my hand might be REALLY raw. I will also note that I dislike those heavily checkered guns that are en-vogue these days as they’re uncomfortable in my hands, so maybe its just how my hands roll.

Oh and one more thing, note at the end of the blade tang CRKT put in a prying tool. That’s a good idea! First you’ll be less likely to use the blade to pry things, and also you have a bottle opener opposite a razor sharp knife! What’s the worst that could happen?

Seriously its a really nice knife! Check it out!

Good Drink Recipe

And interesting as it cannot be called a “Soft Drink” but frankly there is so little alcohol in it that you body likely can process the alcohol faster than you can drink it.

Fill a glass with ice and add a generous splash of Angostura bitters then fill the glass with Polar Orange Dry Soda which is something you non New-Englanders are missing out on, this stuff is damn tasty.

With the addition of bitters, its INSANE good. Also the drink gets a really cool amber color. I think I’ll pour myself another!

Sorted By Size

Another Great video by Hickok45

be interested to hear more back-story from say Tam, on how the frames got their names and how many extinct frames existed. I know from her writing that the No. 1 S&W was a tiny bastard, but was this an “A Frame”?

Nice to see a comprehensive guide to the different frame sizes, also I was really amused at his quip about “Somebody in S&W not counting right” when it came to the 7-shot 686+. LOL we talked about that stuff before, and of course its neat to see what a good shot he is.

Still when I shoot revolvers its almost always in double-action, and I won’t lie, I cringe a little to see him constantly thumbing the hammer.

Dunno what his motives are, as he shoots that 642 (the gun I happen to be carrying right now, and a gun that is a nasty little cuss to shoot) like a champ, I don’t see why he suddenly needs to thumb back the hammer on that 686+ because it probably has a much better trigger anyway.

I just happen to REALLY like the feel of a DA trigger pull.

Flim Review: Harry Brown

Watched this the other day on Netflix Instant View.
Essentially the whole movie is in that trailer. So yet another movie trailer where all the good parts were put up before the film opened. Still if you like what you see there, and could stand to see some more. Go watch it.

Has all the great themes that I talk about here. Gangs ruling the streets in the open, toothless police, and good people disarmed and terrorized and losing faith in the system. Oh and despite rampant gun control, the criminals still seem to be armed to the teeth.

Its a very dark film, and not at all uplifting. Some of these good-man turned badass-vigilante films manage to shoe-horn in a sappy ending, but this one seems to go a more believable direction and tone.

So some good violence, some dark hopeless grit, and some good political points about the filthy underbelly of organized street crime, and big city police.

I really liked it, go check it out.

Also I’ll close with this:

These are my only nits. Harry makes himself sound like some weapons expert but really the Walther P38 in question didn’t fail to function because it had been abused, but because it was never loaded, and Harry shoots like shit, and looks like an amateur when handling a firearm. Also lastly if you have an unarmed drug dealer dying of a gut wound, and you’re planning on torching his little hydroponic grow operation anyway, why waste a bullet on finishing him off? Not like they have Cabella’s in London!

How Gun Control Works

In the wake of the 4th of July I’m hearing no stories of injuries of the countless people who were illegally firing of fireworks. My town had a great show, and after that I stayed up for a few hours to watch the Amateurs put on a further show. Of course the high-paid pros fucked up pretty bad.

Now in gun control heaven, Boston Massachusetts we had a bloody weekend.

Five people were shot in three incidents in Boston today, adding to the mayhem of a long holiday weekend that resulted in 11 shootings.

As of late tonight, none of the victims had died, but two men had suffered life-threatening injuries, police said.

Note in Massachusetts you need to first complete a safety training course and get a series of extensive background checks as well as pay a $100 fee before you can even buy or own a firearm. Permits are issued at the discretion of the local police chief, and specifically the Chief in Boston is highly uncooperative about issuing permits to lawful citizens. Furthermore any handgun you buy must be on the approved “Safety Roster” which of course has nothing to do with safety and everything about banning guns. Also magazines that hold more than 10 rounds or are considered an “Assault Weapon” are illegal unless they were made before 1994. Also all guns are registered with the state, as are all lawful private sales. Furthermore before you can submit to you NICS check you must submit a fingerprint to a digital scanner.

Obviously we need more gun control, because guns are the reason why all these violent acts are happening in the City of massive gun control under the rule of Mayors against Illegal Guns Co-Chair Tom “Mumbles” Menino.

Gun control is nothing but a failed ideology. Treat it as such.

**UPDATE** Go read this post from Old NFO and if I may quote myself:

The antis always say there will be blood in the streets.

They never seem to notice its THEIR streets, and not the streets filled with lawful gun owners.

“Gun Death” Spanking

The story says “spanking”, but I think “Beating” is more appropriate.

Nicholas Williams was arrested last week after police say he spanked his 2-year-old daughter so hard that she died, MyFoxAustin reports.

I can’t imagine paddling somebody on the ass enough to kill them. Still in the end it isn’t a “Gun Death” so why bother worrying, because only “Gun Death” is relevant, right?
