Hot Air brings us This Story

Campaigners have condemned a decision to turn down a bowel cancer drug for use on the NHS in England and Wales.

The health watchdog NICE says the cost of avastin – at about £21,000 per patient – does not justify its benefits.

My company does a lot of cancer work, and Avastin is one of the market leaders for multiple cancer types. “Free” healthcare isn’t shit if it closes doors to medical treatment for you.

Grumble-mutter

Still getting back to the swing of things, and while I have issues to talk about, I’m not hearing my muse. Also lunch break is over, and there’s work in the lab.

Maybe I’ll crank out something tonight. I will note that all the posts made yesterday were syndicated from Sunday.

“Gun Death?” More Cars

Again from Cueball another “Gun Death?” Focusing on Cars

Authorities say 28-year-old Angel Wells was crossing Alexis Road to show an apartment to a couple, but when Wells stepped into traffic, a truck came speeding down the road, hit Wells and never stopped.

Authorities say the driver of that truck, 50-year-old Joseph Posadney of Temperance, Michigan, was found nearby. They say the truck’s hood and bumper were dented and a tire was flat.

Posadney has been charged with aggravated vehicular homicide and leaving the scene of an accident. He is being held at the Lucas County Jail.

Again, no call to ban cars or have more training on a driver’s license or ban on “high capacity assault cars” or some such bullshit.

Think Before you Ink

Bitter found a website I’ve seen before people send in photos of dubious Asian tattoos and the author translates them. Not only do many of the tattoos look totally stupid, and the fact that somebody might get a tattoo in a language they don’t speak or understand without doing a little research is kinda foolish too. And of course “Asian Tattoos” are just another fad-tattoo idea like the whole lower-back “Tramp Stamp” or “Malibu License Plate” thing, or the “Tribal” tattoos (which don’t appear to have any tribal origins, nor do they actually represent the origins of the owner) or a band tattoo (Yeah the Rolling Stones ruled in the 60s and 70s…but they haven’t produces anything good SINCE then!!!) all have the appeal of stitching a polyester leisure suit, or day-glo parachute pants into your skin.

I mean yeah Weer’d Beard had a flat-top all gelled to perfection in the early 90s because flat-tops were the SHIT back then. Now anybody with a flat-top looks like a total dork or a throw-back, so I cut my hair! (FYI for acres of Regret if you look at the cover archives for the Portland Press Herald Newspaper, there was a large above-the-fold, photo of (Then Governor) Bill Clinton in 1992 giving a campaign speech at the Portland International Jetport. The shot is behind slick-Willie and shows the crowd, if you look closely you’ll see a young Weer’d sans beard sporting a AWESOME flattop!)

Still an amusing Asian Tattoo story. I took a semester of Japanese in college and was a known Anime buff, so one morning a friend stopped by my dorm room to show her new tattoo off. Her name started with “A” and allegedly her tattoo was a “Japanese A”. Being as blunt then as I am today, I promptly took my Japanese textbooks down from my shelf and opened them first to Hiragana then to Katakana (I didn’t have a Kanji book at the time, but according to her description, I doubt Kanji would be very appropriate either) and noted that none of the “A’s” (tho nothing Japanese directly translates to “The Letter A”) looked anything like the ink under her skin. Furthermore, if you ask me, her tattoo didn’t even look remotely Japanese, I could be wrong but no matter what she certainly had no idea what she was marked with.

Zombies, They won’t Kill Themselves

A really interesting and funny article here

Puts some spin on zombie movies I honestly hadn’t thought of before. Still for the whole gunnie self-defense theme of this blog I’ll focus on the first and last reasons of the post:

We are simply too smart and too well-armed for any wild animal to hunt. Now consider the poor zombie. It lacks every single advantage that has kept humanity from being eaten to extinction. It wanders around in the open, it can’t use weapons, it can’t think or use strategy. It doesn’t even have the sense of self preservation to run and hide when it’s in danger. And, it’s made entirely out of food. It’s easy prey for any animal that wants it.

Very interesting thought. In a biology class we talked about naming species, and one of the first things required is submitting a holotype. What this boils down to is EVERY SINGLE living species on this earth has had at LEAST one of their members killed simply to become a scientific specimen. Try to think of ANYTHING else that has such a diverse kill-count? Also we’re one of the only species who is found on all continents and climates on Earth, and we currently have members of our species in orbit. All of this is because of our smarts and our tool-using ability. Leads into #1

They Can’t Heal from Day to Day Damage

One advantage to having a fully-functioning central nervous system is that it also does a damn good job of letting you know you’ve been damaged. It does this by way of pain. Think about all the paper cuts, stubbed toes and nut shots you have suffered in your life. Now imagine they never healed, just sat there and rotted while you continued to rack up other paper cuts, stubbed toes and nut shots. Pretty much every wound you’ve ever had would end with an amputation. One thing we know about zombies from Romero and Fulci is that they are a clumsy lot, walking into doors and helicopter blades without a second thought about what kind of damage they are suffering.

While complete insensitivity to pain seems like an awesome superpower in theory; in real life, you wind up being more like Mr. Burns than Wolverine. Congenital insensitivity to pain is a neurological condition that some people are born with, meaning they don’t feel pain. They can feel everything else, but the absence of pain means they accrue damage to their bodies but are unaware of it. Even with the ability to call for help, loved ones watching out for them and our coddling society, this can still lead to all kinds of terrible shit, like infected body parts and bitten off pieces of tongue.

All the dings and bangs zombies will suffer after tripping, walking off of bridges and stumbling around on dark cloudy nights will eventually leave them limbless, toothless and with every bone in their body broken. Seriously, in the event of the Zombie Apocalypse, just stay inside, watch all the episodes of 24 back to back, then walk out on your lawn with your Corpse Rake and tidy up (you will have to buy a Corpse Rake, however, if for some reason you don’t already have one).

The Landscape is Full of Zombie-Proof Barriers

The zombies’ lack of coordination, along with the inability to see in the dark (we haven’t had any infrared zombies yet, but holy shit! We call dibs on the idea) is going to spell the doom of countless zombies in any area outside of a parking lot. This is a group that doesn’t know how to find roads or bridges. They just go wandering off aimlessly. Mountains, major rivers and canyons would thus quickly be home to piles of broken zombie rags stinking up the scenic views. Even if zombies had the foresight to not walk over cliffs or into raging rapids during the day, nightfall would result in most eventually walking into rivers, over cliffs and off of bridges, diminishing their numbers.

But even in nice, flat, paved cities, where it would seem like people would be extra-fucked, the landscape still works in favor of the living. History has shown that in most awful situations, people don’t always act like the panicky idiots in a horror movie. In cities, people would likely congregate in the upper levels of high-rise buildings, where the invasion can be held at bay with simple security doors. Also, the streets themselves would keep the undead corralled in straight, easy-to-aim-down lines where they could be picked off by snipers, or just bored office-workers waiting out the quarantine by dropping office supplies onto the undead from the top floors.

Weapons and the People Who Use Them

As we touched on briefly above, if Homo sapiens are good at one thing, it’s killing other things. We’re so good at it that we’ve made entire other species cease to exist without even trying. Add to the mix the sheer number of armed rednecks and hunters out there, and the zombies don’t even stand a chance. There were over 14 million people hunting with a license in the U.S. in 2004. At a minimum, that’s like an armed force the size of the great Los Angeles area.

Remember, the whole reason hunting licenses exist is to limit the number of animals you’re allowed to kill, because if you just declared free reign for everybody with a gun, everything in the forest would be dead by sundown. Even the trees would be mounted proudly above the late-arriving hunter’s mantles. It’s safe to assume that when the game changes from “three deer” to “all the rotting dead people trying to eat us,” there will be no shortage of volunteers….The zombies have no choice but to walk into bullets. And all this isn’t even counting all the other household hand guns in the world, nor the fact that zombies also have to contend with IEDs, Molotov cocktails, baseball bats, crowbars and cars that the general public will no doubt be using to cull their numbers.

Again we are ONLY an important species because of our intelligence and our tool-using, and let’s face it without our tool-using our intelligence is moot.

Think about that the next time an anti-freedom advocate attempts to ban tools.

Oh and on a side note of cool this page on corpse decomposition is really cool but not for those who can’t stand blood and guts!

Gun Death?: A Common Story

Cueball sent me what is a familiar story.

MEDINA, Ohio (AP) – A 2-year-old girl died and her 3-year-old sister is in critical condition after they ran off from their baby sitters in northeast Ohio and got stuck inside a neighbor’s hot car.

Actually a bit of an odd story, as generally its the parent who leaves the kids in the car often by negligence tho occasionally by stupidity. Still nobody seems to talk about stupid bans and laws to attempt to stop this. Why is “Hot Car Death” different than “Gun Death”?

I personally think that authoritarian “Progressive” assholes have cars, and have kids, so we can’t ban those things.

Gun Retention Fail

Found this hilarious video on the Failblog youtube channel:

Not only does the security guard look like a total ass, and not accomplish his goal, but his bell obviously got rung so hard he ends up leaving his damn gun on the floor.

Of course this dude is of the ever-ridiculed sect that is “Rent-a-Cop” (AKA: Private security guard), I think this illustrates rather comically why you should carry a gun, because you can’t trust the hired gun (be they a Private security guard, or be they a “real-deal” cop or soldier) to be there to save your life…let’s face they’re only human, and frankly we don’t pay them enough to expect it!

DO WANT!

Just found this video and I’m filled with lust!

The site is here (can’t seem to find it on sale yet) And frankly I’d honestly prefer a Dedicated multi-tool rather than a knife with a wrench on it, plus an advantage of a knife with the wrench seems to be a big advantage if I need to tear-down my gun in the feild or at the range….but I have installed standard spring plugs and guide rods on both my 1911s, and have zero desire to own a full-length guide rod gun where a bushing wrench becomes a field-strip necessity.

Still its a nice looking knife that comes with a little 1911 fanboy flare….kinda like this one.

Bloggity

Just some amusing blog observations. I am so swamped with “Gun Death?” posts that this blog has become interesting reading for me, as there are older posts popping up every morning that I may have even forgotten about. Also again, thanks for readers sending me stories this archive I’m building is already, in its infancy, becoming quite impressive, and hopefully useful against the narrow-minded fools that some how think that “Gun Death” is a useful metric for their evil cause. I actually went away for a week and never once did my blog go dead! (Tho my readership stunk, but I don’t blame you, the “Gun Death?” stories aren’t much fun)

Another interesting thing is peeking at my sitemeter logs This post on Basking Sharks and Ocean Sunfish appears to be one of my most popular posts as an entry page. I assume I achieved some magical google-fu with it, but I can’t tell you what it is. (FYI how can I get sitemeter to show me referral pages?) Still its a nice post, and I actually rather like it more than my previous monster-popular post on the Cobra Patriot and its POS trigger.

Oh blogging is FUN!
