Images of the Antis: Public Health

Not the most truthful spot. First Dr. Murthy isn’t a “widely respected health expert”, he’s a fairly new doctor, with not a ton of experience. This is in no way besmirches him as a physician, but he’s hardly some of the doctors I know who have been working as physicians and medical researchers since before Dr. Murthy was born. Further for the short time Dr. Murthy has been a doctor he’s spent a good deal of that campaigning for President Obama and Obamacare. Further he has some pretty radical views of violence in America.

As for the “Obvious Fact” I’ll get to that in a bit.

Nope a surgeon general doesn’t need the NRA’s approval, and in fact the NRA’s concern about this physician is just one of the many faults he has. Really he’s just another Harriet Meyers a political flack taking an appointment as a reward as a good retainer. Sorry, American politics don’t work like that, and likely Dr. Murthey will never be surgeon general.

So on that “Obvious Fact” from Moms Demand Action:

No Public Heath issue? There isn’t! America continues to be safer and safer every year, and that is with more relaxed gun laws, more private ownership of firearms, and more people licensed to carry.

Again we can argue that guns don’t make us safer, I would point that it really looks like they do, but there is nothing concrete conclusive for me to say “The Science is Settled”. What I can say with full confidence is that guns do NOT pose a public health risk.

As for “Lobbyists paid to be wrong”….was that meant to be ironic?

“Gun Death” Massive Gas Explosion

In Harlem:

Federal investigators are on the scene of an explosion and two building collapses at 116th Street and Park Avenue in East Harlem, while rescue crews search for those still missing.

The explosion happened at either 1644 or 1646 Park Avenue around 9:30 a.m.
Both buildings collapsed down to the first floor, littering the area with debris
At least seven people are dead and 70 others injured, at least two of them critically
Rescue workers are searching for any other victims, with several occupants of the buildings still unaccounted for
A team of NTSB experts has arrived to investigate the cause of the explosion

This is a scene of complete horror and death, not only are 7 or more dead, but so many are now homeless and without possessions. Do we really need to live in a world where “Gun Death” is somehow a valid metric?

Images of the Antis: Ironic

You have to wonder how simple-minded some antis have to be:

First up, if government could prevent bad guys from getting guns, then Chicago and DC would be the safest places in the nation.

Also Ironically the people in the picture look more like traditional Mexicans or Central Americans rather than North Americans.

Interesting given that most nations South of the US Boarder heavily restrict gun ownership and have HIGHER violent crime INCLUDING “Gun Death”.

The fact that somebody would make that image and post it online is really sad. Sad worse when anti-gun lobbyists pick it up and host it on their pintrest page!

Gender Neutral Toys

Those of you who know me, know I don’t give two shits about “Gender Roles”. In my house, my wife works the long hours and makes the big money that pays the bills, while I work part time, cook, clean, and take care of the baby. By standard gender roles I’m the “Good Wife” and my wife is the “Good Husband”. As for our daughter we have a house full of gender neutral toys. Now we didn’t seek out toys that were gender neutral, its just she can’t play with complex toys yet, and my wife and I really dig animals, and there is NOTHING more gender neutral than animals. Everybody loves cool animals.

Now the other day I dropped LaWeer’da off at Daycare and they gave her a dolly to play with. It was a really cool doll that had a long coat and toys hanging off her that could be suspended by a play gym. Now I already know how the school treats this toy because I’d seen a young boy playing with this doll the other day.

I’m fine with her playing with dolls or play kitchens (which she’ll probably do because she LOVES watching us cook) and vanity toys, just as much as I’d be fine with her playing with trucks and tools. Toy guns I have some reservations because this little girl WILL learn to shoot. I feel having people capable of using a gun and not knowing HOW to use one safely and responsibly, and I don’t think toy guns should be treated differently. We’ll cross that bridge when we get to it.

Still I stand this way because I don’t care. I want my girl to have fun when she plays, and whatever is FUN she should play with it. I had a Cabbage Patch doll as a child, but I really liked my stuffed animals better. I liked my action figures, my toy guns, and my toy swords and knives even more. This isn’t because I’m a boy, or whatever, it just turns out I like guns and swords and knives.

I loved the Ninja Turtles! Animals, swords, and action figures! SO COOL!

Now the Progressives are a little more…well Bossy, about it. They don’t want to assign a gender identity or something and don’t like kids playing with gender-typical toys. They encourage ONLY gender neutral toys, or boy toys to girls and girl toys to boys. Well Kinda:

Sadly, 9-year-old Grayson Bruce has gotten used to being bullied. The torment reached new and unbearable levels last week, though, when he showed up to school with a ‘My Little Pony’ lunch bag.

“The first day I brought it to school, people smirked, you know, laughed. The usual, ‘That’s hilarious. Why would you bring that?’” the North Carolina grade-schooler says of the bag, which features the character Rainbow Dash.

In the school yard, though, the abuse turned physical as some of the other kids targeted Grayson for his supposedly “girlie” taste in toys.

“They’re taking it a little too far, with punching me, pushing me down, calling me horrible names, stuff that really shouldn’t happen,” he tells WLOS News13. “Most of the characters in the show are girls, and most of the people put it toward girls, most of the toys are girlie.”

Though the bullies were punished – Grayson says they were made to walk laps – the school went a step further to resolve the issue, reportedly asking that the Rainbow Dash bag be left at home from now on as they worry it’s become a “distraction” and a “trigger for bullying.”

Fuck you in the neck! First up, while My Little Pony these days is slightly skewed to females, it has a HUGE male following. Just ask Erin and McThag!

Plus this is a great lesson on individuality! If you like something the other people like that makes you an individual! Hell since this is a gun blog I’ll note that I carry a 1911 and a Ruger LCR. Now Revolvers and 1911s have really come under fire as “outdated” compared to double-stack polymer pistols, and .357 mag and .45 ACP have gone out of favor for 9x19mm. But I LIKE the setup I have, and I don’t care what others think.

Do I want the teacher to take away my “Outdated” guns? No, and nor should the teachers take this boy’s My Little Pony bag away. Now growing up I made a few fashion choices that I thought were cool, that got me ridiculed by my friends in school. I decided it really wasn’t a battle I wanted to fight and that was the end of that.

There’s a lot to learn in that, and the school did the wrong thing.

H/T Mrs. Weer’d

Accidents Happen: Know Your Gun and Be Responsible

This is a sad story, and it is 100% preventable:

as retrieving a candle holder from the top shelf of a closet when she inadvertently knocked a 22-caliber revolver off the shelf. When the pistol struck the ground, it accidentally fired one shot, striking the woman in the chest, police said.

Now generally when you hear about a gun dropping and discharging I toss up my bullshit flag, as most modern guns are 100% incapable of firing unless the trigger is pulled. I suspect most of these cases either a person was fiddling with the gun and pulled the trigger and made up a story, or the gun DID drop, but they attempted to catch it and ended up pulling the trigger.

Most guns are drop-safe. Certainly if you have a modern Semi-auto or double-action revolver made in the last 20 years or so, it should be drop-safe, but by all means verify this. If your gun is NOT drop-safe, DO NOT CARRY IT! Also DO NOT LOAD IT UNTIL IT IS READY TO FIRE (there are some exceptions we’ll get into later). No matter what if a gun drops, let it drop, and get out of its way, you’re looking at a LOT more risk trying to catch it than letting it fall.

Still the fact that this is a revolver and a .22, there’s a good chance it very well may not be a drop-safe revolver. There were a TON of cheap .22s made in the late 19th, and early 20th Century that weren’t designed to be drop safe. Also the NAA Mini-Revolver is drop safe, but you need to bring the gun to half-cock, align the cylinder just right and ease the hammer into the notch. This is a good design and perfectly safe, but it takes some skill and practice to get the notch aligned and also if you bring the hammer back too far, it will go to full-cock and you will NOT be able to put the hammer into the safety notch without first lowering the hammer and starting over. If the hammer isn’t properly rested the gun might discharge if dropped.

A better illustration of this:

Now Hickok doesn’t show clearly how to properly load one of these non-drop-safe guns. Ryan from Handgun Radio Shows it very clearly here:

Now if you load a single-action or double-action revolver in this way, its TECHNICALLY not loaded in its resting state, but the moment you ready the gun to fire a loaded chamber will swing into position. In these instances the gun is not only drop-safe, but safer than any really any other gun out there. If you carry a revolver in this way, that is safe. Still I prefer modern revolvers with hammer blocks or transfer bars to allow me to make best use of a revolvers limited ammo.

There is also this practice of stashing loaded guns around your home in the event of a home invasion or other defensive need. I don’t like it. It leaves guns unsupervised where they could be improperly handled, accidentally dropped or moved, or stolen. There’s an easy way to have a gun close at hand, CARRY it. Right now I’m sitting at my computer typing this post with a loaded .357 in my pocket. Done and done. The gun is always within arms reach if I need it, but it is always under my direct supervision. Its the best of both worlds! You can keep loaded guns close at hand around the house if you really want, but why not tuck them in a quick-access safe? They can be quickly locked and opened, preventing theft and accidental interactions, but be ready. If you don’t have kids in your home I don’t see anything wrong with putting a gun in your night-stand or near your bed while you sleep. Still consider keeping it unloaded, either with a loaded magazine in the gun and and empty chamber, or with a speed loaded beside it. It won’t add much to your access time, but it will add a degree of safety. And certainly that gun in your night stand isn’t going to do you much good if you’re not in that room or not at home, so when you wake up, lock it away. Its just smart.

Accidents happen, and while the “Common Sense” cries to disassemble all guns, lock the components in separate locations, and lock ammo in a different location nearly completely negates the value of owning a gun, there are some simple steps to take to prevent accidents like this from happening..

Be Safe out there!

“Gun Death” Icy Roads

This winter has been brutal, and sadlyIt has cost a Maine man his life

Maine State Police say a 22-year-old man has died after the car he was driving crashed into a utility pole.

…Police said the initial investigation shows speed and slippery road conditions are factors in the crash.

Be safe out there, its a long way until we start seeing things thaw!

Do we need “Common Sense” reform on Roads, Cars, or just winter?

Great Video on Ares Armor

Yep, the raid was for the database not the 80% Lowers, and punishing a citizen for fighting back legally.

They could have easily gotten everything they CLAIMED they wanted done without breaking his stuff, but they wanted to send in the Ninjas!
