“Gun Death” and Bad Justice

A local story:

The 40-year-old man who allegedly fled the scene after a fatal dirt bike collision with a Plymouth teenager will be in court Tuesday to face a misdemeanor charge….The criminal charge of leaving the scene of a recreational vehicle accident with personal injury carries no jail time. If convicted, Kelly could face a fine of up to $1,000 as well as the loss of his vehicle and his license for one year. Environmental police filed a criminal complaint against Kelly on April 17.

Get in a serious accident and leave the other party to die and at MOST you lose your license for a year and have to pay a GRAND???

This is the MAXIMUM this goon will face. This is in Massachusetts where you potentially face prison time for having a novelty key chain with a cross-drilled .44 Magnum case on it.

This is just disgusting!!!

“Gun Death” Furby

More of a fun one!

We’ve heard everything from a toy lightsaber to a Swedish sausage being used in an attack, but this furry weapon of choice may be a first.

According to police in Pennsylvania, 27-year-old Ashley Trimmer used a “Furby” toy to assault her live-in boyfriend during an altercation over a Facebook post Wednesday, KDKA reports.

The Moon township resident was arrested and charged with simple assault after the early morning incident.

According to the criminal complaint obtained by the Smoking Gun, two officers arrived at the house shared by Trimmer and her boyfriend, William Ley, after receiving reports of a domestic dispute. Ley told the responding officers that Trimmer first threw the “Furby” toy at him — striking him on the right side of his face — before lobbing a Sony PlayStation controller at the other side of his head. The latter injured Ley, causing some bleeding, the report states.

Snerk!

Anti-Gun “Logic”

Gotta love them beating the drum even when it makes no sense. Joan is over at her blog talking about the Boston Bombers. Not about them making a bomb…because only “Gun Death” matters to her, but about how they had a gun.

Commenter Chris notes that they didn’t have an Massachusetts LTC, so they couldn’t buy a handgun, as GCA 68 makes that a crime. Joan Responds:

So apparently Chris, you are ignoring the fact that private sellers at gun shows and other venues sell guns to just about anybody with no background checks and sometimes no IDs. If they ask for no ID, they have no idea whether someone is a resident of their state. This is happening all over the country.

First up, I doubt many gun sales between strangers happens without at least the exchange of ID, its so easy people don’t even think about the depths of the ramifications. It’s a crime to sell a gun to a minor or a handgun to somebody under 21 (in most states), and it is illegal to privately sell firearms across state lines.

With no ID exchanged you’d need to make a pretty good argument to why you thought you knew this person well enough to know they were of age and a state resident to avoid federal prosecution. (That is, if we ever prosecuted people on this crime, that’s another story)

Meanwhile people who don’t care about the law don’t care….exhibit A (PDF), in Massachusetts you CANNOT posses, or exchange a firearm without an FID or LTC. The ID must be shown, and with a sale the transaction must be registered with the state.

Why do all those guns seized trace back to Massachusetts????

We all know EXACTLY why!

“Gun Death” Hammer

More Hammer Attacks!

The death of a 37-year-old man Sunday night while he was attacking a former roommate with a hammer in north Houston will be referred to a Harris County grand jury to determine what, if any, charges will be filed, officials said….Police said Jones had been living at the apartment but was kicked out a few days before the attack. At about 11 a.m. Sunday, he went back to the apartment and argued with one of the residents. The two men punched each other. Then Jones left.

However, Jones returned to the apartment about 7 p.m. He attacked the resident with a hammer, hitting him several times in the head.

The resident wrapped Jones in a bear hug and the pair fell onto the floor. Jones hit the man with the hammer again. The man choked Jones. When Jones began to cough, the man released him and told a bystander to call 911.

Jones was rushed to Memorial Hermann Northwest Hospital, where he was pronounced dead.

Wow, looks like the tables were turned on that one. Pretty crazy story!

Economic Stimulus

This actually makes the stupid “Gun Buybacks” make sense!

Arizona Gov. Jan Brewer has signed a bill into law that bars cities and counties from destroying guns turned over to police at community buyback events and instead requiring that they be resold….House Bill 2455 was designed to close a loophole in state law that generally requires seized firearms to be sold to licensed gun dealers.

I hate gun-buybacks because it does nothing to improve public safety, it costs the public money in police time, as well as whatever prizes they hand out for the guns, and it almost always destroys a few valuable antiques, and useful guns that could be used by people with more common sense.

This actually could eliminate most of that, given that the guns are being traded for a pittance, even if the state sells the guns for very low values, it will likely net a profit. All I need to see is that profit covering all the other state costs, and I’m fine with it, as the valuable guns will find a loving home, and the junk ones can still be sold for scrap if it can’t be sold.

Also I wonder if there will be less “Buy Backs” now that the end result is sending guns to loving lawful homes, not melting them down.

More Fatal Breech of Protocol

These guys aren’t angels, but still we have cops violating protocol and killing suspects:

A dozen Cleveland police supervisors face internal discipline charges stemming from a chase that saw officers fire 137 shots and kill a fleeing driver and his passenger, the city’s police chief said Tuesday….An internal police review showed that both officers and supervisors broke department policies. The chief said a review is continuing into whether any officers will be disciplined….Some officers also thought the two were armed and some told state investigators they were frightened and feared for their lives.

Both the driver, Timothy Russell, 43, and his passenger, Malissa Williams, 30, had cocaine in their systems and criminal records. But no weapon or shells were found in their car.

Drunk, on coke, and not stopping for officers. None are good decisions, but I don’t know if it warrants a hail of gunfire, also while the deceased weren’t angels, I’m curious how the cops decided they were such a danger.

I’m split on this one, it’s hardly the LA Death Squad shootings of anything that might be a pickup truck, but I am thinking of those cases.

Gun Control: Killing Jobs

Well they can’t claim it makes you safer…but it can make you poor!

Arms manufacturers in at least two states with strict new gun laws are making good on their promise to move their operations — along with thousands of jobs and millions in tax revenues — to locales they deem friendlier to the industry.

In Connecticut, where venerable gunmakers like Colt and Sturm, Ruger & Co. have been joined in the last decade or so by upstarts like Stag Arms and PTR, reform of gun laws in the wake of the Sandy Hook school shootings has left the industry feeling unwelcome. Bristol-based high-end rifle manufacturer PTR Industries announced this month via Facebook that it would be taking its 40 jobs and $50,000 weekly payroll to an unspecified new state, widely believed to be Texas….AR-15 manufacturer Stag Arms could soon follow suit, along with Colt’s Manufacturing and Mossberg & Sons. The moves could cost the Nutmeg State 3,000 jobs as well as the estimated $1.75 billion in annual taxable revenues.

Thankfully we don’t need jobs or tax revenue, right?

Good job guys!

“Gun Death” Lab Safety

Ok this one makes me ANGRY! My current lab is almost all “Designated Lab Space”, and falls under lab safety rules. Pretty much the only places that isn’t “Lab Space” is common areas shared by all the labs.

This means when I’m doing data entry I can neither eat or drink. Can you tell me a time you need caffeine MORE than when you’re doing data entry? If I need a snack or a drink, I must leave my lab and go to a common space. It sucks, but its for safety, and that’s why this story pisses me off!

County prosecutors say a University of California, Los Angeles chemistry professor has been ordered to stand trial after a fire in his lab caused the death of a 23-year-old research assistant….Prosecutors say Sangji was in Harran’s organic chemistry laboratory Dec. 29, 2008, when she transferred a highly flammable material without wearing a protective lab coat. The material spilled and caught fire, causing severe burns.

Now guilt needs to be determined by a court of law. Was this a student violating the rules, or was the lab run in such a way that violations of the rules were overlooked? I used to work with a man who would routinely be seen drinking coffee or eating a sandwich while running samples in the lab space. He was frequently reprimanded for this, he probably would have been fired if not for his senior position. If he had been harmed by his unsafe activities there would have been a paper trail and the blame would fall on him. Still I can see bad lab mangers not caring, or even not supplying protective gear, and that can encourage unsafe behaviors.

No matter, protective gear is a MUST! Wear your lab coats, wear your safety glasses, and no open-toe shoes in the lab! They don’t make you wear that stuff because dress-up is fun!
