Old NFO has a nice memoriam up on Newbius. He hasn’t confirmed it, but it appears that the Memorial services have been scheduled for Wednesday as well. I just picked a random day, and it just doesn’t feel right.
Sadly I don’t believe I have the time or resources to make it to any services. Newbius was a family man, and I suspect he’d understand. I don’t want to be competing so for right now I’m just going to put the whole thing on hold for the time being.
I’ll keep you posted with thoughts and plans, as well as information I have on Newbius’ passing. Continue to keep his family in your thoughts and prayers.
Les is prone to making comical candle pictures for various topics. He just sent me one that is serious and apropriate for today’s sad news.
Like Les, I knew you, Newbius, and I’m better for it. I’m also so sad that the last time I said Goodby to you, it was the last time. I so wish it wasn’t.
I first met him at the NRA convention. I will never forget standing with him and Alan Gura, and getting totally lost listening to them discuss various federal gun cases and constitutional law. And this was after he told me he didn’t even have any law background. He was a big brutish looking guy, but like most guys that size he was kind and gentle, but Newbius was also as smart as they came.
In Pittsburg I was in his hotel room when we got word Osama Bin Laden had been killed by the Navy SEALS.
What’s really eerie about all of this was I got a phone call from him on Saturday while I was up on Wally’s roof. The phone was in my truck, he didn’t leave a message. Since I’m heading down to Virginia tomorrow I was going to return the call and hopefully get a chance to meet up with him and his lovely wife, maybe meet his kids I’d never met, but he spoke the world of.
I’ve just been busy with work, and packing, and preparing to leave I assumed I could just call him later.
How wrong could I have been? My heart goes out to his family. He touched so many hearts, and touched them deeply even in brief encounters. He was a good man, and will be sorely missed.
The video is shit. Resolution is horrible, also ABC in their infinite wisdom decided to obscure the one important bit of their film with their banner. Given that this is an international exclusive, I have to see that part as intentional, as the alternative is rank incompetence of an ENTIRE National News Station.
Still what you do see is Zimmerman is not horrendously messed up from the fight. His hair is close cropped so you can see a mark on his scalp, but can’t see how severe it is. You can see his nose, can’t tell if its broken or swollen.
Certainly nothing is freely bleeding, and the blood reported by the cops either wasn’t there, or was stopped and cleaned up by the EMTs before he arrived on site.
Before I transition to my next point I’ll say the dumbest thing Zimmerman did hands-down was to be out on watch alone. If he had had a buddy riding shotgun help would have come when he was shouting. Further he’d have another set of eyes to supply another part of the story (or supply another story in the police interrogation which might point to somebody lying). **UPDATE**Maybe I’m being a bit rash. The cops responded in amazing time of about 6 mins, on what was a “Suspicious Person” call. All the 911 calls reporting the fight between Martin and Zimmerman, and the gunshot report Police on scene mere minutes after Martin was shot. Unless there was another watchman patrolling around in their car when Zimmerman called, I doubt they would have even beat the cops on scene, let alone been there before the alleged fight broke out which only lasted a few minutes. Depending on what I’m doing, it could take me a few minutes just to get my shoes on and grab my wallet and keys, and put on a jacket for the rain, let alone the time it would take to drive my car up the street. -Ed
Now I’ll use this to springboard to this story. People are expressing solodarity with Trayvon Martin by making this Friday “Hoodie Friday”.
How about “Bring Your Weed and Pipe To School Friday”? How about “Bring Stolen Jewelry To School Friday?”.
My point is neither Zimmerman nor Martin are people we should aspire to be…but one side is willing to make an angel of somebody who wasn’t.

The rubber meets the road with who assaulted who, and who was defending themselves. Did Zimmerman assault Martin in an attempt to “Arrest” him, and Martin struck back? Did Martin jump Zimmerman?
The people who are talking about race and clothing are NOT talking about Assault and Self Defense.
Paramedics were making so many trips to a dialysis clinic in the East Texas city of Lufkin, a top fire department official wrote an anonymous letter to state health department inspectors pleading for somebody to take a look at the place….On Monday, Kimberly Saenz, a 38-year-old nurse who worked at the clinic, was set to face trial for one count of capital murder that accuses her of killing as many as five patients and five counts of aggravated assault for injuring five others…A year later, an indictment listed sodium hypochlorite, commonly known as bleach, as her “deadly weapon” that killed the five, including Rhone and Risinger. The disinfectant is a normal cleaning solution used at medical facilities like the dialysis clinic where Saenz worked as a licensed vocational nurse, an entry-level health care position.
Strange case, no convictions, no motive. Who knows, but bleach is a VERY poisonous chemical and would do the trick.
