Skeinz, a yarn store in New Zealand, is calling on knitters throughout the world to knit sweaters for the penguins affected by a massive oil spill that occurred earlier this month. The tiny sweaters, while eliciting aww’s and squee’s, serve a very important function: they prevent the oil-soaked birds from poisoning themselves by preening, as well as keeping them warm before it’s their turn to be cleaned up by cleanup workers.
Click over for pictures. The whole oil-coating and cleaning activities is VERY rough on the birds so I’m not sure how much good this would do, but if you can knit and think this is a fun project, I don’t see how it could hurt!

Bacon Frosting. I won’t lie, it didn’t excite me much…until the Mrs. pointed out we could frost Peanut butter cupcakes with the stuff. Now if this has all the yummy bacon taste that Cherry Nyquill tastes like a ripe Black Cherry this could be a disaster of cupcakes-in-the-trash proportions. But if its good…well we will have been there to see it all happen.
I say that we shall assemble our team and set forth to this like Mt. Everest. We shall do it BECAUSE IT IS THERE!
There are some tools far more deadly than a gun.
An Everett woman was arrested for investigation of first-degree domestic violence assault after allegedly taking a sawzall power tool to her sleeping husband’s neck.
The woman gets the king-loser award for failing to kill a sleeping man when she had a Sawzall. Seriously, I cut my deck apart in like an hour with a sawzall, somebody’s neck is NOTHING compared to that.
Guy’s lucky to be alive, but if she had been successful we could tell his family that Sawzalls are designed to cut building materials, not human bodies, so his death isn’t as relevant as a “Gun Death”.

So back in 2008 Jeff Quin wrote a review on a new Subcompact .45 ACP Pocket pistol from Kahr. Go Read his review, I’ll say I’ve bought several guns that I’ve read his reviews for and found them to be right-on. His pictures are also great. When I saw that it was a .45 that was the same size as a J-Frame revolver (the gun I pocket carry as a light gun or a backup) I wanted it.
Of course it isn’t on the bullshit gun “Safety Roster” so acquiring one was a bit difficult (that’ll be another post) but I finally did.

OK so let’s do a review with pictures below the fold!

So now a Massachusetts Resident Christina has hung out her shingle for doing home massage. She asked if the wife and I were interested. Mrs. Weer’d was, I wasn’t so sure if I would be interested in such things.
Still being always interested in blog fodder and trying new things, and tempted by the fact that Christina discounts multiple massages at a single location because her travel and setup only need to be done once, I agreed to give it a shot.
So I let Mrs. Weer’d go first and I observed. I’ll leave her experiences for her own review if she wants to write one. I will say that the Mrs. put on some new-age music that she finds relaxing. She finds relaxing, I find grating to the ears. I joked that I was going to play Psychobilly for my massage. To my surprise Christina welcomed me to play whatever music I wanted. Upon further discussion Christina admitted to being a bit of a metal-head herself, so with that I felt emboldened to fill the Sonos with my entire collection of White Zombie The Horror Pops and the Necromantix.
With the music thumping, Christina left the room with instructions for me to get undressed as far as I was comfortable and to lie on the table face down with the sheet over me. I stripped to my under-breeches and assumed the position. I welcomed the light ribbing when the Masseuse noted that “Mr. Big Talker” decided to take his massage in his boxer briefs.
Also never having a massage before I asked her to explore pressures and I’d inform her if things were uncomfortable, too hard, or too soft.
I guess my preference was “Light Swedish Massage”, which is not very Macho at all…which is good because Weer’d ain’t no Macho guy! 🙂
OK onto the serious stuff. It was REALLY enjoyable. If you think Metal and Psychobilly as odd or inappropriate music for a Massage, you’d be surprisingly wrong. Besides hand massage she also used hot rocks which are REALLY delightful. She worked on the muscles that I jokingly call “My Heart Condition”, and overall it was VERY relaxing, and my hour massage was over before I noticed.
Then we all had dinner.
Oh, and as much as I asked…It didn’t happen. 😉
So thanks Christina! And if you live in the People’s Republik of Massachusetts, or want to Import her like the Farm Family did I couldn’t possibly recommend her more!
And dudes, if you’re apprehensive about a lady giving you a rub-down in a clinical fashion, maybe you should give it a second thought, as I really enjoyed it!
But Maybe the Occupy X group might get an economics lesson.
First there’s the story of non-protesters helping themselves to free stuff at the camps, now Mike talks about how the group is getting donations, but the funds aren’t trickling down.
These events aren’t the exception they are the NORM! These people are protesting against such things happening in private industry, but it happens in governments.
Ever noticed that say in Mao’s China famine was wide-spread and the bicycle was the #1 mode of transportation, yet Mao had a nice double chin and a limousine to cruise around in.
So let’s tell a little story. I moved in with Mrs. Weer’d a year before we were married, and we got a reasonable apartment in Medford Massachusetts. (Well it seemed damned expensive for the guy moving from Portland Maine from the neighborhood where I was one of the only white faces on the street, and everybody spoke the Somali dialect of Arabic. It was VERY reasonable for the lady moving from a cramped studio in Cambridge Mass)
Two years later our landlord informed us they didn’t want to be dealing with the property any more, and their best bet was to turn the double-decker we lived in into a pair of Condos. They gave us first refusal to buy our unit and their ask price was their rock bottom, not their list, which was a nice gesture. We got pre-approved for a loan, and looked at the market and decided that while the price we were quoted was a damn good price for a Condo in Medford in our neighborhood by Tufts University, but there were towns further away from Boston, or neighborhoods less ritzy as ours where we could get loads more for our money. Plus I must say owning a Condo is the absolute worst of owning a home (ie if something breaks you don’t have a landlord to call, and if you get sick of the space or your neighborhood you have to sell the home you can’t just break the lease and walk) and the worst of renting (You still have neighbors that share walls with you, and you can’t just knock out a wall and build on without getting the OK from the other people in the condo association).
So we let the owners know we’d be bailing when the lease was up, and we started going to open houses. It didn’t take long before we realized we weren’t going to be happy buying a house we could AFFORD. (Key word there) so we grabbed another apartment.
The new place was also nice and we weren’t paying much more on rent. Still this was just an apartment we were staying at to SAVE MONEY so we could finally not only buy a house, but buy a house we both wanted and could AFFORD. (See a trend here?)
When the housing market crashed all it did was bump our plans ahead. We bought when the market was still dropping. We got a fixed rate mortgage that’s monthly payment was slightly more than our rent at our apartment. Not only that but we had cash so we could fix up the house and make it so we loved it. This is not a starter home. The wife and I were talking about how the town is doing a walk through of the historic cemeteries on Friday when I’ll be in Maine. I said it was no big deal as I’m not moving again. I’ll do it next year.
So yeah we were hoping to buy at the bottom of the market…as you know, in many places home values are still dropping, but we did buy low, and took advantage of a buyer’s market. Still none of this shit mattered to us, we bought a house we liked and planned to stay in for the long haul, and we could afford the mortgage payments, and those payments were fixed. The market could drop for another 10 years and we wouldn’t have to do shit.
Still we did re-fiance which was 100% win-win, as our payments went down, and it turned out the work we did on the house actually gave us more equity, and again the new lower rate is fixed.
Of course Obama is again looking to bail out those who didn’t do what we did.
Kinda pisses me off that we’ve been pinching pennies and squirreling away cash while people have been just buying whatever they wanted and the ACLU-shy banks would co-sign for, and then get some love from the socialist-in-chief.
Its almost like its stupid to be an adult these days.
This is a fantastic illustration on why “Gun Death” is a meaningless metric and what the REAL violent crime problem is in this country.
A previously convicted murderer is headed back to prison after a Tulsa jury found him guilty of assaulting a woman by using a sword…He was sentenced to 51 years in prison and got out of prison in 2005, records show.
When Arp was convicted of murder, Oklahoma did not have a law requiring a person to serve at least 85 percent of a prison term for murder before being eligible for parole. It does now.
Doesn’t say how long he served, but it can’t be all that long. Also think about this how many of you have killed anybody? Now note that this guy has killed and been convicted of Murder TWICE.
How many of you own large knives or swords? Guns? Now think of all the people you know. That’s a pretty big data set. So what’s the only common denominator? This guy, the murderer….and yet those who use the metric of “Gun Death” seem to assume that because I carry a gun I’m somehow more likely to murder and assault…yet somebody who HAS murdered (with or without a gun) is let go.
How much sense does that make to you?

So Mike over at Everyday No Days Off has some new Shirts . I’m actually wearing my M16 Selector shirt right now, and I’ve been wearing it so often that as soon as I put it on my wife starts to roll her eyes.
BTW as a further product review these shirts are very light and soft, one of my concerns was that they wouldn’t hold up to multiple washes. Nope, I’ve washed this kitten a bunch of times and it still looks brand new and is still pleasantly soft on my full-auto nipples.
Yeah so I suspect I need to get this shirt wicked bad to add to the collection.
Sadly Massachusetts has an Assault Weapons ban still in effect so items stamped “Restricted For Police and Government Use Only” are actually binding, rather than a novelty as it is in Free America.
Still super classy shirt, and I love how they feel!
