I Wish They’d Just Tell The Truth

So I just read this Examiner Article on a Store in Tennessee that has decided to put up one of those binding “No Guns” signs. Go read the whole thing, and I if you’re in the area I strongly suggest you follow his lead in boycott and communicate your reasons. What I want to address is this bullshit:

Thank you for your letter concerning our concealed carry signs. We have chosen to ask both our employees and our patrons to leave their firearms at home when visiting or working in our stores to provide a safe environment for all. In the event of a robbery, our employees are instructed to comply with the robber’s demands…no life is worth what is in the register or what can be carried out off the floor.

First we talked about the core of this right here complying with a robber in no way means he’ll also comply on not hurting you. I agree nothing in your store IS worth dying for, frankly nothing in an Aston Martin dealership is worth it either…plus its insured. (More on that later)

But when somebody says “Give me X or I’ll Kill you” giving of X in no way guarantees your safety, any more than a “No Guns” Sign on your door will cause the guy to not come in with a gun. Though this stream of reasoning it does NOT make it a safer place because danger is functionally illiterate.

Now what it DOES do is make the store owner’s MONEY safer. My Father-in-law owned a Liquor store, and it was robbed at gun point several times. He’s a gun guy, he may have even had a gun in the store, but he was hiring the standard-issue people who were willing to work minimum wadges to run the register. Students, people looking for a second job, and people who were down-on-their luck, either through no fault of their own, or through bad life choices. I’m sure he had a few felons running the register who couldn’t handle a gun legally, as with people under 21 who couldn’t handle or carry a handgun. Furthermore he wasn’t interested in vetting their skills. I think we can all agree that a moderately competent shooter/situationally aware person is ALWAYS better off with a gun on them. But what about a totally INCOMPETENT person? Things can get worse.

And then there’s golden rule #1 of surviving a gun fight: Don’t get into a gunfight! Any time deadly force is introduced into a scenario there is a chance SOMEBODY will be hurt or injured. This rule applies evenly to both the attacker AND the defender.

The employees are instructed to comply with the robbers so that if they DO defend themselves and the store, they can be terminated, and not held liable for any of the fallout, be it injuries, bereavement, or a suit on behalf of the scumbag who started the damn fight.

But let’s go a little deeper in that money thing. My wife and I grew up in the same town, and we lived maybe 3-5 miles apart, and she had a convenience store/Gas station on the corner by her house. She once told me it was robbed about a dozen times while she was living there. I was unaware of this mostly because it had never come up in conversation, and the news didn’t see fit to cover it. Now that I think about it, the only convenience store robberies I’d heard of on the news was one where the clerk was killed during the robbery…and I know of two of those.

Convenience stores get robbed, its what happens to them. Why? Well because the Clerks are ordered to comply with the robber if its a national chain. I haven’t looked at the numbers, but I suspect the chain stores are most often robbed, compared to the Mom-and-Pop operations, where a shotgun or a pistol is probably on property, and the robbery is probably going to be committed against somebody with a family interest in the store.

Furthermore the goods are insured. The 7-Eleven gets all the money in the till BACK after a robbery, thanks to their insurance. So no big deal, right? WRONG. First they have to PAY money to KEEP their money. Second every time their money gets stolen the rates go up…not just for that store but ALL stores.

Long-story short, robbers make an awful mess. They threaten and take lives, they make certain places more dangerous by mechanism of compliance, they cause insurance rates and the prices of goods and services to go up…and frankly their right assholes!

If you see a robber, do the world a favor and shoot the bastard. You’ll be doing everybody a favor!

Morning Video

I really dislike the California open carry laws. Carrying an unloaded gun does very little to enhance public safety. Frankly the only time I think this would be useful is defending a 3rd party. Still unless you live in one of the Counties that is permissive about issuing permits, (and taking population density into account, you probably don’t) its all you have.

The best part is listening to Anthony Portantino attempt to explain why open carry is such a bad idea, and why the people who open carry are somehow bad people. Great arguments if you’re an emotional hand-wringer. Not much if you ever….you know…think.

“Gun Death” Wedding Party

From Massachusetts where you need a permit to buy a gun.

The man accused of stabbing four people at a Sunderland wedding party on Saturday has surrendered to authorities.

Sunderland Police Chief Jeffrey Gilbert said Ian Woishnis, 28, surrendered to town police between 11 p.m. Sunday and midnight Monday. The Amherst resident is accused of stabbing four people at a party held at the Pioneer Valley Apartments, 39 Old Amherst Road, on Saturday night.

Sounds like a lovely wedding. I bet stories like these make divorce attorney’s salivate visibly.

Of course no guns, so this isn’t “Gun Violence”, so no news! Also shows Massachusetts oppressive gun laws work!

You Think So?

I had to laugh at this VPC Tweet:

Would “proud” NRA Life Member Thomas Edison be so proud of today’s NRA? We doubt it.

Well let’s think about this. First Edison was a scientist with a knack for mechanics, and probably had a better understanding of how things worked than most people. He was also a wiz a physics.

This would mean when an organization attempted to ban firearm because of cosmetic details, he might smell the bullshit long before others did.

Also he was a scientist, so when a war of statistics broke out he’d be able to see which statistics were fair and which were biased.

Also he had a home in Ft. Meyers Florida which is known as the “Gunshine State”.

I dunno, Its foolishness, but if you want us to speculate, I suspect he’d be plenty fine with the NRA…

“Civilized Countries not at War “

Go have a look at the pictures and videos here, as well as story and pictures here.

While you read that note that the UK is a nation that has a very low “Gun Death” rate, and its considered by those who see it as a valid metric as a “Civilized nation not at War”.

Kevin Baker notes how things used to be. This is the dream world the antis would love for us to live in.

I would rather they relocate to those “peaceful” streets.

Why Did Paul Helmke Leave?

I’ve been thinking about Paul Helmke’s departure from the Brady Campaign.

Sebastian has an amusing post up where the Brady’s latch on to a bit of lunacy by Bill Maher. The lunacy can be viewed here:

Note the blatantly homophobic joke that gays prefer assembly line anonymous sex in public restrooms. While I’ve unfortunately encountered “Gay Cruising” in a public park…let’s just say I know quite a few black guys who smoke Menthol cigarets, and enjoy fried chicken and collard greens…

So what does this have to do with Helmke? Well I wonder if Helmke’s Republican Affiliation had anything to do with it. Now granted Helmke was a RINO, likely to the left of gun-grabbers, and tax lovers, like Mitt Romney. Still look at who has replaced him, and who exists in the gun control leadership positions. It seems they are all Ultra-Left “Progressives”.

I also wonder what this means. Could simply mean that the Brady Board held their nose with Helmke because they thought they could use his Republican affiliation to both convince pro-gun Republicans to support more gun control, or to make them appear “Bi-Partisan”.

Still something tells me that since #1. The Brady’s can’t pass a bill unless they get NRA support it too, and #2. Since not only do most people not CARE that Helmke has an “R” after his name, most people aren’t even aware of it, and assume he’s just another Pinko “Progressive”. That they decided it wasn’t helping them having a Republican around.

Now was this just for convenience, or was it tactical? Are they going to attempt to push harder in the most-liberal, most anti-gun districts of America? Could be. Still the egregious actions of places like Washington DC, Chicago, Massachusetts, and California have been the battlegrounds for defining the boundaries of the 2nd Amendment, and only making our job easier.

Just something to watch out for in the future. Also if anybody can think of a Brady or Joyce affiliated politicians (such as Mayors against Illegal Guns) who are republicans, let’s compile a list.

Housekeeping and Troll Exposure

This is just a further continuation of my assertion that all “Progressive” activists in general and Gun Control activists specifically are Narcissists, stalkers and trolls. It seems the only difference between the ones that nationally represent the cause, and the cellar dwellers who simply troll pro-rights sits, and me-too at the handful of anti-gun sites, is how well they can conceal their deviant behavior.

So that leads me here. I did a post on how short-sighted and foolish the Joyce Foundation “Ask Campaign” was. In it I put a link of New Trajectory, one of the few “Cease Fire” branches of the Joyce Foundation that actually has a blog, granted with a heavily moderated comment section, like all anti-gun blogs. Its proprietor who goes by the dubious name of “Baldr Odinson” jumped on and made a pretty rude and fallacy-rich comment that can be found here.

It wasn’t much of an argument to the rebuttals were both easy, and numerous, feel free to read them. Also check out Thirdpower’s extended rebuttal here at his site. His makes an excellent point that Baldr calls us fools for rebuffing his Joyce talking points, and notes that he allows his children to play in homes of gun-owners so long as they meet his safety standards. Only on a separate occasion he notes that the is no way children can safely play in a home that has guns, period. Oops.

Further at one point on his blog somebody asked how he would protect his family from harm. His response:

@ Bob: Not with a gun…I and my son are students of kung fu, and my wife practices haganah. We are all still relatively new to these martial arts, but its a start at self protection. Not as lethal as a gun, but you can’t accidentally beat yourself to death. 😉

Now read my rebuff VERY carefully, as I want all to know I am indeed being fair. Have a peek at Mr. Odinson, I do this in NO way to disparage a person on physical appearance, trust me, I ain’t no prize and I’ve never been mistaken for Adonis or Jason Statham in my life. (I did have the young daughter of friend say I looked like Brad Pitt…We all had a good laugh at her youthful Naivete)

I will point out what martial arts champions look like. They do not look like myself or Baldr. They are generally larger in size, well muscled, and lean. I’ll also point out that in all the Martial arts competitions are divided up by weight class, and by sex. I’m not saying its impossible for s smaller, lighter person to take down a larger heavier one, or a woman to take down a man, even in the same size and weight (tho generally women run a bit smaller), but it is deemed uncommon enough that every martial arts competition out there, from boxing and kickboxing, to MMA and Kung Fu, separate the fighters by weight and sex.

I’ll also note there is a HUGE number of martial artists who are also advocates for defensive firearms. The most visible is Chuck Norris, who has a pretty well-respected career in many schools of martial arts, and most will agree he is a martial artist first, and an actor second, but also a strong activist for the NRA. There are lots of other people in the world of Martial arts who keep and bear arms despite their superior physical condition, and training.

And of course there’s the people who use martial arts as part of their job. Military, Police, and Security forces. They’re all generally armed, if not with firearms, with other lethal tools like clubs and knives.

Sorry Baldr, while Kung-Fu will give you some valuable tools to defend yourself, even the grand masters of the arts don’t want to bet their life on it. And those are not people like myself or Baldr who could stand to drop a few pounds, and maybe lift weights a good bit more.

OK so now back to the original topic. After I rebuffed Baldr’s arguments made this statement:

I appreciate you giving your unique opinions to the discussion at Weer’d World, but I will note your, and your compatriots past behavior of simply dropping talking points, and not returning to continue debate. Any point worth making, is a point worth defending. If you are not willing to defend your points with reasonable debate, I will start marking further comments by you appropriately as Spam. This is a blog for discussion of issues, not for your personal soap box. If you wish to discuss the issues I welcome it, if you feel the need to drop controversial comments and not follow up on them, you are abusing my blog.

If you find this task daunting, maybe you should recruit some more voices for your cause.

Assuming he only came to my post I also emailed it to him. Now for those who might see this as a bit extreme, go have a look in the comments of the linked Thirdpower post. Baldr makes one inane comment, and is gone. Have a lot at the thread where I made that statement. No follow-up. Thirdpower makes reference to Baldr claiming to be unaware at his own affiliation to the Joyce foundation. That comment can be found here, note again that’s the only comment he felt like leaving. There are also many other blogs where he’s done exactly the same thing.

This is a behavior I’ve called Schrödinger’s “Progressive”, where a “Progressive” person drops in, drops their own talking points, and leaves, paying no mind to the rebuttals, many of them well-thought-out, and citing data.

I love debate, its something that makes both sides stronger. This isn’t debate, this is simply using another person’s blog as an extension of their soap box without the owner’s permission. Its the blog equivalent of littering, he leaves his trash for others to pick up.

Now of course I did get ONE response in my email from Baldr.

Shucks. Funny how you don’t demand this of your extremist pals, but then it’s not really a debate when the only people who post are yes-men.

Baldr

Now we’ll forgive Baldr, he’s a “Progressive” which gives him license to be an expert on things he knows nothing about, such as my comment section. I think it speaks for itself. Also given that Baldr’s comments still exist, and those that are up right now will not be touched, does make him look like quite the fool. My Response to him:

Back when I supported gun control, I also found that I couldn’t support the agenda no matter how much I wanted it to be true. The facts and history were just not behind me.

I had no choice, live a lie, or switch sides.

I demand this of all who comment at Weer’d World. It just seems only those who support gun control seem to feel that the hit-and-run tactic of debate will somehow win hearts and minds.

You have two quite good direct rebuttals to your little comment up now. Will you show us exactly where we are wrong on this whole debate, or will you simply chose to no longer waste our time?

-Weer’d

Those rebuttals have multiplied since I wrote that. of course I got no further response. It seems that his beliefs are hardly worth defending. Also rather ironic that he takes offense to my statements, but he plays the typical anti-gun game of deleting most of the comments made on his own blog.

Yawn. I know boring stuff. Just Weer’d World is not just my soap box, its my forum for debate and discussion of the issues I find important. I welcome all who agree or disagree we me to comment, and debate. I don’t have a “Commenting Policy” because mostly I feel them unnecessary and tedious. My general feelings are that we’re all grown-ups here so we don’t need a referee. I clean up obvious trash. I get spam from bots here that I delete, I have maybe seen one or two comments that were just childish people using my blog as a graffiti board that just wrote some naughty words and left it at that. I simply deleted those and the problem stopped. As for REAL abuse, like Baldr, or some of his trollish compatriots, I think I owe it to them to make a full post on their banishment.

So there it is. Baldr, you had your chance. All your previous posts will remain, any further posts will be marked as “Spam” which they rightfully are.

Good day!

Has Anybody Noticed

That when the President calls a press conference he’s always late? Now I don’t pay much attention to the dear-reader when he’s parroting TOTUS. I’ll also note that this is a non-partisan reaction, I hate prepared speeches, they are nothing but re-iterations of shit you should already know, and generous heaps of polish on turds. Also since they have been hand-crafted to make the reader look good so they will give a wide berth to any issues that are deemed problematic. This goes to the worst Pinko Leftist out there, as well as the grandest pro-liberty candidate of the people.

Still I notice this because I’m a New and Talk radio Junkie. Keeps me abreast in the issues (if I appropriately surf the right stations to avoid the partisan cheerleaders who’s shows are little more then the very crafted speeches I despise) and keeps me entertained when I find myself shuttered in a quiet lab doing monotonous tasks.

Being news stations they generally take heed to any local or national special events, Presidential Press Conferences are one of those things. And I notice so often when the President says he’ll make a 1:00 Press Conference its 1:30-2:00 before he manages to get his ass to the horn and start squawking.

Doesn’t bother me any, as I’d rather he not be on the station I’m listening to at all. Still what does it say about the President that he’s consistently half-hour to hour or more late for an event HE arranged?

Now I understand he’s the President, things can happen. Maybe a top-secret message from one of the half-dozen war fronts this “President For Peace” came in and he needed to be briefed on the issue or make an executive order. Maybe he was briefing a few key heads-of-state before the speech and some of them got a little chatty. Shit happens, and he is a high man on the totem pole, so a lot of people want his floppy ears.

But I can’t recall a press conference where the president showed up on time.

With consistency like this its almost like he thinks his time is more valuable and we have nothing better to do than watch him read from a teleprompter, and then decline questions from the Press “Corpse”.

Well with the high unemployment numbers and the stock market taking a shit, maybe he’s right…
