True Dat!

Yep this is EXACTLY what offshore life is like.

When the weather is REALLY nice I think I miss it. Then the weather turns shitty, or I think about the stuff in this post, and I decide I kinda like the lab.

On BUGs

Caleb has a presser on the Charter Arms Pit Bull. Its a neat idea, and as Caleb Says ” Are there better defensive revolvers out there? Certainly. Are there better defensive guns chambered in .40 S&W? Yes. But that doesn’t mean I don’t want one, I just can’t help myself.” Its a neat gun, and I haven’t handled one, so I won’t comment if its a good gun or not. Also .40 S&W is not a cartridge I have much love for. I think 9mm and .45 do just as good a job as it does, and with a more pleasant recoil.

Still I was struck by this statement from the presser:

Nick Ecker, president of Charter Arms, said, “The Pit Bull is the ideal revolver for law enforcement officers to use as their back up, because they can now carry a revolver that utilizes the same ammo as their sidearm.

Now first up, I’d say a gun in their “Undercover” size (S&W J-Frame Equivalent) that eats 9mm would make a LOT more sense for this angle, as it would be much smaller, and much lighter. As it is, this Pit Bull appears to be the same size as their famous Bulldog .44, and it has an all-steel frame, so its also heavy.

Essentially if the Officer carries a Glock 22 or 23, this “Backup Gun” is about the same size and weight as the duty gun it supports.

Now personally I could care less what I carry for a BUG, as I’ll be drawing and shooting my primary gun in things go bad, and I’ll only be going for the BUG if I run out of ammo, or my primary has a malfunction. (or to arm an unarmed comrade who I know is proficient in firearms…or has either run dry or has a malfunction).

Still I don’t put on a pistol thinking I’m going to use it (otherwise I’ll bring a rifle or a shotgun) and on that vein I don’t carry spare mags because I think I’ll run dry, and I don’t carry a BUG thinking I’ll have to go for it. But I also don’t carry a gun because I’m an optimist.

Still with all that I really don’t expect to utilize my primary ammo into my BUG…I imagine If I had time to be stripping .40 Rounds from my duty mags into a revolver I’d have time to get my primary working. Personally when I carry two guns its a 1911 and a S&W642. One’s a .45, the other is a .38. No ammo interchangeability, and the .38 is just there to hopefully end a fight my .45 couldn’t quite get me out of.

If I really was concerned about ammo interchangeability, you’d be making a much better tactical decision to pack a subcompact version of your duty gun. So if I had a Glock 22, or 23 as my duty gun, a Glock 27 is much smaller and lighter than the Pit Bull, and there’s no need to fiddle with the ammo, you can just stuff the bigger mags into the smaller gun. Same goes with the S&W M&P series, as well as the Springfield XD series, as well as the full-size 1911s vs the compact models. Don’t know Sigs too well, but I suspect the 226 and 229 can share mags. The list goes on.

Still this is all gun-geekery. Bottom line, carry your damn guns! Carry a gun you like and are familiar with. Carrying 2 guns, or a reload, or both is better than not, but don’t get too twisted about your loadout. If you find yourself going toe-to-toe with the red Army and you don’t have a long gun, and a SQUAD behind you long guns (and light machine guns) you’re fucked no matter HOW many guns you have, or what ammo they eat from.

Don’t over-think things. Just carry and be safe!

911 Busy Signal

So I was listening to the latest episode of Empty Mags (BTW its a super-fun show for those who like guns and need a little more podcast in their life) and in this episode JP talked about an interesting phenomenon that is one of my big reasons for owning heavy weapons.

What happens if all the officers in your general area are busy? What happens if a disaster happens where 911 service or phone service in general is disrupted?

While I’m vocal and very pro-freedom, and not terribly happy with how the .gov runs the show, I’m hardly a threeper. Overall the guns that get the most mileage in Weer’d World are my carry guns and my nightstand gun. Still if there are no police available, and I’m in position to be calling for backup, a handgun just won’t do. A long gun is something you really might want, and preferably of the so-called “High Capacity” kind.

JP gives a far more scary story (in commonality not in disruption) than what I had been thinking about. He mentioned a bank robbery in Tuscon that had all the Police force occupied. (I wonder if that was also the case with the umbrella scare)

My big scare is the Big Dig collapsing, and possibly taking a big hunk of Boston with it. This seems even more real with this new discovery. The tunnel is a dangerous piece of shit that very well may fill itself in just from the simple elements we get every year in Boston, but add in an Earthquake (which are rare, but VERY possible in New England), or a terrorist or industrial accident, and the deck is really stacked to the side of Entropy.

For the people a little further south we have the hurricanes. For California they have Earthquakes, Tsunamis, Mudslides, Wild Fires, and like ANY place that has copious amounts of “Progressives”, riots.

The antis always say “Why do you need a gun? Just call the cops and have them use their guns!”, and we all know that’s foolish. But have you thought about what might happen if there are no cops to help you out of an ugly situation, such as an angry mob, looters, or riots?

Guns to have: Carry guns (and carry setups that allow you to comfortably carry EVERY DAY) a home defense gun (I prefer a handgun for mobility, ability to use a phone in my off hand, and the ability to conceal it for the event that somebody that isn’t a threat knocks on the door unexpectedly. But a long gun is plenty acceptable. Use what you’re comfortable with) and a SHTF gun, which should be a long gun with a large capacity and the capability to quickly reload it. Personally I prefer a rifle (I has an FAL) but a shotgun with an extended magazine, and a means to quickly get reloads into that gun when the tube empties out like a side-saddle, a shell-holding sling or bandoleer…or do the smarter thing and get a gun like a Saiga shotgun that eats from a removable magazine.

Be safe, and be prepared!

Funny How Life Works

Because of the electrical issues with the patio we have the power cut to a few sections of the house. One of those sections has the Sonos transmitter, so I didn’t get my usual fix of morning news radio which usually gives me a few bits of blogfodder (tho it seems the news of the day is the UK riots, and the Union tantrum, which we already covered). Also given we’re going on vacation next week I took some time this morning to catch up on the backlog of the “Gun Death?” Files (BTW you got stories, send them in to weerdbeard AT gmail dot Com, I’ll be filling the mag for the next week tonight and Friday), so I did blog work that will trickle in on the next few days, but not today.

So yeah, I was bummed that today might be a low day, but now Uncle has delightfully given me some traffic on the High Heels “Gun Death”. Funny how that works!

New readers, enjoy yourself!

Grumble

So the Patio project is shaping up, but man its becoming a slog. Everything looks top-notch so far, but we’ve had some troubles with the contractor, and some setbacks with the electrical systems that run through the back yard. Hopefully it’ll all shape up, but man its breaking our balls every step of the way.

Like all home improvement projects, its a pain, and we’ll be glad when its done (hopefully by Friday evening) and with a little luck it will be all worth it.

King Classy

You can add to his list of epithets among “Nazi”, “Marxist”, “Aspiring Dictator”, and “Hypocrite”, we may soon add “Domestic Abuser” to George Soros’ resume!

“While still in bed, Soros slapped Ferreyr across the face and proceeded to put his hands around her neck in an attempt to choke her,” her lawsuit claims.

Soros, 80, then allegedly attempted to strike her with a glass lamp, and though he narrowly missed, it smashed on the floor and she cut her foot, which required three stitches.

According to a police report, she called cops, but no charges were filed.

He’s going for the world record under “Most Despicable”.

Another Great Project

There are several of us bloggers who have running theme projects going on our blogs to aggregate certain news items. I of course run the “Gun Death?” Files, Jay runs the Dead Goblin Count where he shows the benefits of personal protection firearms, specifically in the hands of non-police private citizens. Sean has a great series “Felons Behaving Badly” showing the problem with our justice system where vetted violent criminals are allowed to run wild and commit yet more and more violence.

I need to add to this list something I’ve been reading for a little while, but haven’t yet talked about here. Barron has a series he calls “SSCC” for “State Sponsored Criminal Count”, showing so-called “Public Servants” committing criminal acts. (Barron if there’s a better way to link that series let me know)

Most of the above projects are simply to raise awareness. The human mind seeks out patterns, and by nature wants to categorize things. We see this with certain agendas in the MSM, but not with others. That’s why we aggregate the stories we do. I would say SSCC fits under the “Sunlight is the Best Disinfectant”, bringing horrible behavior that the powers that be would rather we not see to light.

Well worth your reading!

“Gun Death” Gas

This one has no death, but its pretty scary with its implications.

An Austin man tried to kill his mother by flooding her East Austin home with natural gas, according to an arrest affidavit.

Looks like Mom smelled gas and got to safety before harm came to her. Now the gas alone can be dangerous. Last year somebody died going into their flooded basement. The water had snuffed the furnace pilot light and the basement was filled with gas. The person lost consciousness and either suffocated on the gas or the water.

Of course if the gas is exposed to spark or flame the results can be not only disastrous to the occupants of the house, but the whole neighborhood.

Yeah, but no guns! So why worry?

h/t Whipped Cream Difficulties Who made me laugh in the email with: “I’ve gotta say, I’ve eaten my share of meals at Taco Bell, but it’s
never gotten so bad I’ve been accused of attempted murder… :-)” Well played, bud! 😀

Union Thugs

So there’s a Verizon Strike going on here. It’s producing lovely scenes like this:

This isn’t exclusive to Verizon’s Union. There was a Union Strike at a Nursing Home I used to live near. It was the same thing. Rude behavior, and disruption of business. Only the union thugs would be aimlessly wandering in the street in front of cars of loved ones visiting sick family members. Our Fed-Ex driver has mentioned he was having people block his truck and hammering on the doors as he attempted to make a delivery. And of course they were calling him horrible names.

Why all the fuss?

Some 45,000 Verizon Communications workers across the mid-Atlantic went on strike at midnight Sunday morning to protest a proposed contract that would freeze their pensions and require them to contribute to their health insurance premiums.

If there is a non public-sector, or non-union Job that has a pension these day’s I’d LOVE to see it. Those of us who work for a living have these crappy things called 401Ks that are right now taking a shit because of the crash of the Stock market. “Contribute to their Health Insurance Premiums”??? You mean what we all do?

That’s it? No wage freezes? No ending of 401K matches? No Layoffs?

So they’re striking because the preferential treatment they’re getting? Is there any wonder why those industries are in trouble, and companies are looking to shed their dead-weight union slobs?

Amazing how few grown-ups there are left in the world….

More on Martial Arts

Breda found this video from a “Slut Walk”. I have mixed feelings about them. On one hand I 100% agree that people should be able to conduct themselves in public, and even have the full freedom to make an ass of themselves without fear of violence. On the other hands, they are making asses of themselves which does make the whole movement look foolish despite the very valid argument. Much like the activism against the prohibition of Marijuana that degenerates into a bunch of droopy-eyed stoners eating Fritos in in a drum circle. I like the cause, but damn you make it look a mess!

Still my post is concerning this video:

Ok let’s first take note how serious the lesson is. They are giggling and laughing, and frankly even if the moves were effective they’re not performing them in any realistic posture. According to these ladies they’re all planning on being raped by 7-foot men who will allow them to strike from a standard standing position. Uh-huh.

As Uncle Says: “Bad advice will get you killed”. I’m sure given the crowd that a not insignificant number of people might take this foolish display to heart, and if they are ever called upon to use it they will most likely fail.

Also again I will note: Show me a full-contact Martial Arts competition, preferably one that has rules for submission and knockouts (as opposed to sparing competitions where form and “contact” are scored over the actual effectiveness of an attack, like Boxing, or MMA) where women are allowed to compete head-to-head with the men.

This reminds me of Chicago’s “Just Puke On Yourself” martial art.

Carry your damn gun. If you don’t or won’t carry a gun, carry a weapon with good force multiplication. A fighting knife (FIGHTING, do NOT carry a simple pocket knife thinking you’ll be able to use it as a weapon in a time of need) or some form bludgeon or lever. Remember if you choose to avoid a gun, know you will have a drastically more difficult time subduing an attacker, and unless you’re built like an NFL Defensive Line Man, chances are good that you might be disarmed or stopped while in a melee, and your attacker will be stronger than you.

Also do NOT carry Less Lethal defensive weapons. They very often don’t work at all, and when they DO work they don’t work for long, or don’t incapacitate an attacker…and in the case of chemical sprays, you’ll likely experience some of the spray yourself, and there’s a possibility it may affect you MORE than your attacker.

As Uncle said in his post, he’s heard some REALLY stupid advice given to, and from Women about self defense. I have a friend who took some stupid class where the central “weapon” was a loud and emphatic “NO”. Yep, a word. In one of my favorite films Aliens the Marine Frost says: “Now what are we supposed to use? Harsh Language?” That was a JOKE, not a tactic, ladies!

It seems like these bullshit classes and seminars are all just magical talismans used to get the violence adverse women to clear their minds of any inconvenient truth.

STOP THE BULLSHIT! Rape, Sexual assault, and violence are REAL. By their nature they are done by people who are both strong and brutal. While some attacks and assaults happen in “Bad Areas”, if “Bad Areas” really existed, or were things that could be avoided we’d just put fences around them and warning signs and get on with our day.

If you live in reality it means you should take your safety seriously. This doesn’t mean living in constant fear, it simply means being prepared!

Be safe out there!
