Update to the Massachusetts Range “Accident”

Turns out it wasn’t an accident:

Police say a Rhode Island woman intentionally shot herself to death at a Massachusetts gun range over the weekend.

…The newspaper said a police report said DeBarros left notes about her intention and also posted a comment to her Facebook page.

I said some admonishments about the range safety at the Massachusetts Firearms school in this post.

I must admit I was wrong. If a person has committed herself to taking her life there is NOTHING you can do about that. What I will say is suicide is a selfish and self-centered act that leaves loved ones behind in an avoidable way. Further committing suicide in this way is really cruel. Not only do you tear about those you leave behind, but also you hurt the business kind enough to unknowingly help you achieve your goal. I can’t do any action to really stop suicide, I just don’t think there’s anything out there. This woman left her intentions on Facebook when she could have asked those very friends for their support helping her get through whatever her issues were. Further if you contemplate suicide you also must consider the aftermath. Who will you be involving in your final hours? Who will clean up your mortal remains?

Massachusetts Firearms School receives my condolences in being forced to deal with this, and I hope this unavoidable act doesn’t tarnish their reputation.

The Facebook Spin!

So Facebook was demanded to take a stand on guns, and they did. Well I’ll let the antis tell you what they think. Brady PDF:

BRADY’S ASSESSMENT:
Facebook’s new gun policy does not go far enough to prevent dangerous people, like felons or
domestic abusers, from purchasing guns without a background check for three simple reasons:
1) Unlicensed Sellers Can Still Post Guns For Sale on Facebook and Instagram
Google, Craigslist, and eBay all prohibit unlicensed sellers from advertising guns for sale. Facebook
has failed to meet the bar set by these other websites.
2) Community Monitoring Is Inadequate
Instead of a more sophisticated technical solution, Facebook will rely solely on its members to
report violations, leaving innumerable gun ads untouched.
3) The Reminders to Comply with Gun Laws Are Not Visible Enough
Most sellers will never see important messages reminding them to comply with gun laws. Facebook
will only send reminders to a seller when their post is reported and will allow administrators of gun
pages to relegate this information to the About Us section.

I agree with all their assessments, except I’m pleased rather than displeased. What’s really cool is Facebook was formed as a social site where people could meet up, look up lost acquaintances, and mindlessly sputter about their mundane days.

Like everything that is user-based, things rapidly changed. Facebook is used by political campaigns to support their cause. Its used by businesses to promote their business. Its used similar to how blogging websites like this are used.

Also people started selling guns. Now facebook was never intended to be a sales bazaar, but while its good sight to organize a meet-up of friends to enjoy a meal, its also just as good to organize a meet up for the transfer of a firearm.

Places like Craig’s List, Amazon, and Ebay were started as sales sites, and they decided that guns were one of the several things they didn’t want to sell. That’s fine, its their site, and their rules. Google is a little different, they have sales sections, but they also have social sections. Either way, Google is anti-gun and has done all it can to squash all of that. Still their rules, I’m fine with that.

Further Facebook had every right to ban any sort of sale, transfer, display, or discussion of guns. They chose not to. This isn’t a huge victory for the pro-gun side, nor would it have been a defeat. Still essentially Facebook has set up a framework for what they consider acceptable transfer of firearms, essentially green-lighting the practice so long as you play by the rules.

That’s pretty cool! Now at the forefront of this was Moms Demand Action. Let’s have a look at their spin:

Moms Make Facebook Safer: Nine Ways Facebook Agreed to Crack Down on Illegal Gun Sales

Ooh let’s have a look!

1. Facebook will block all users under the age of 18 from viewing reported private gun sale posts and pages primarily used for these offers.

Good, guns are for grown-ups. Now children are allowed to shoot guns in this country, but adults need to take responsibility for that. Some states allow minors to own guns if they are of a certain age, or meet certain requirements, still that gun needs to come from an adult somehow, as FFL transfers are 18 for long-guns and 21 for handguns on the federal level. This is a smart move for facebook as this plays it safe with the maze of state laws.

2. Users will be able to flag posts that promote suspicious and potentially illegal gun sales for deletion.

This is Facebook’s policing system. They don’t scan every post that goes up, instead they allow people to flag posts and they will look to see it it breaks the terms of service, and delete any offending post. They have rules, you have to play by them. They judge the rules when other users flag them. Smart, as it has Facebook expend less effort on their end policing it.

3. Facebook will delete reported posts that offer gun sales without background checks.

This is actually a half-truth. Legal private sales CANNOT undergo a background check, and these sales are permitted under Facebook rules. What Facebook does it they will delete any post that specifically advertises “no background check required”. So if you want to legally sell a gun to another person in your state, you won’t be running a background check, but don’t remind Facebook of this, they won’t like it.

4. Facebook will delete all reported posts that offer gun sales across state lines.

Nope! Facebook will delete any posts that advertise an ILLEGAL sale. From their presser:

We will not permit people to post offers to sell regulated items that indicate a willingness to evade or help others evade the law. For example, private sellers of firearms in the U.S. will not be permitted to specify “no background check required,” nor can they offer to transact across state lines without a licensed firearms dealer.

You can buy and sell guns across state lines, you just need to involve an FFL in the state where the gun is transferred. This is federal law, so Facebook is simply taking the same stance they do on child pornography, criminal threats, and drug sales. So this isn’t really anything new, just a clarification of Facebook policy that has always been around.

5. Facebook will continue to report threatening gun-related posts to law enforcement.

See above, this is nothing new, nor does it have anything to do with guns.

6. Users will have to acknowledge laws that apply to them when they sell guns — and they’ll be blocked from continuing to the site if they don’t.

Pretty good policy. Most sites that offer sales of guns or anything else put up “Lawyer Warnings” like this. It allows them to be safe in case something illegal slips under their radar. A criminal act committed through or using Facebook is the responsibility of the user, not Facebook. Duhh!

7. All gun-related Facebook pages and groups have to acknowledge the laws that apply to them, and must display this information prominently. Once reported, they’ll be taken down temporarily until they do so.

more of the same above. Man now I’m wondering why they didn’t work this redundancy up so they could get a round ten instead of nine. Two more!

8. Searching Instagram for gun-related hashtags will prompt a warning and require users to acknowledge gun sale laws before viewing search results.

Ok maybe they were trying for 10, and just couldn’t spread it THAT thin.

9. Facebook will target ads at users interested in gun-related pages with information on gun sale laws — including background checks requirements.

Good for them!

Yeah as you can see this is a defeat for Moms that they are at best trying to spin as a hollow victory.

Better yet, this is promoting in-fighting between the anti-gun groups. Brady is pissed at Facebook and demanding more, while Moms is doing their best to spin this as a desperately needed win, and is not making further requests for fear that it will hurt them in the long run.

Awesome!

Another “How to Argue With Gunnies” Article

I found one a little while back which wasn’t very serious (tho I suspect the author intended it to be so) and it turns out the author is a total lunatic.

Still here’s a new one, and I must say this one is MUCH more serious, and rather well written: “How To Argue For Gun Control: 5 Anti-Gun Regulation Arguments, Debunked”

Its a fisking-style article citing a pro-gun talking point, then attacking it. So I’ll cite the point, and the argument, then rebut.

Common Argument #1: Gun control laws violate the Second Amendment.

Your Response: The Second Amendment says “A well-regulated militia being necessary to the security of a free State, the right of the people to keep and bear Arms shall not be infringed.” Are you really arguing that, in the 21st century, citizen militias are necessary to secure American sovereignty? If so, you’re clearly unfamiliar with how powerful the U.S. military is.

Yes, the Supreme Court did rule in 2010 that the Second Amendment extends to private citizens who aren’t in militias — but that same ruling, McDonald v. Chicago, also found that gun regulations are well-within the bounds of the Second Amendment.

In any event, if you think the Second Amendment prohibits any and all restrictions on gun possession in the U.S. no matter what the circumstances, then you must believe that convicted murderers have the right to carry machine guns in prison. Right?

I’ll stand down on the Militia vs Military bit, as it comes up later. Still they admit that this talking point is indeed true, they just want to argue the finer points of it…and they really don’t. Indeed Heller and McDonald to agree that some restrictions are permissible. They do cite that concealed carry permitting is one of those permissible as is the restrictions on felons and the mentally ill….which makes that little straw man at the end even more ridiculous.

Still the limitations were left vague and non-controversial overall, I assume so they can be hammered out in less broad decisions, or simply handled by the other branches of the government. I can understand Heller was a HUGE case and the idea that the supreme court would throw out nearly 100 years of laws on one ruling is a big step. Further while I’m a second Amendment absolutist, and personally WISH Heller was broader, when thinking of a broader scope and of the Republic, its safer if the courts keep things narrow. It didn’t take one day to sign all these laws, it frankly shouldn’t take one day to repeal or amend them.

Still what was struck down was handgun bans, and bans of other firearms in “Common Use”, kinda like all those guns that are being talked about for bans. Really this response sets the tone for the article. He doesn’t start on a strong point, and openly shows his bias and lack of commitment to even do simple research of the issue. Also each point has graphics and animations between them, which are often crass, or incoherent. Still this point closes with the most rational graphic…and I unfortunately have to use that term lightly.

Dunno if you can see it, but read what’s behind the asterisk! “excluding Mexico”. Yep, this is another “high income, developed world, modern nation, etc” graph. Essentially you can read these classifications as “Cherry Picking”. Essentially They pick nations with low reported “gun death” and include America for effect. Makes a shocking graphic, what it doesn’t make is much of a point.

Common Argument #2: You know who else took people’s guns away? Adolph Hitler.

Your Response: No, Hitler actually relaxed gun control laws in Germany. You’re probably referring to the Weapons Law of 1938, which Hitler signed, but that was a deregulation of guns in Germany. The Weapons Law eliminated permit requirements for shotguns, rifles, and ammunition, which opened the door for unregulated sales of all weapons other than handguns. Hitler also made more people eligible for permits, lowered the age limit for gun ownership from 20 to 18, and extended the length of gun permits’ validity from one year to three. In an extensive 2004 study on the topic, Bernard E. Harcourt concluded that “the Nazi regime relaxed the gun laws that were in place in Germany at the time the Nazis seized power.”

This is actually true…well except if you were a Jew in Germany during the Third Reich

Jews (§ 5 of the First Regulations of the German Citizenship Law of 14 November 1935, Reichsgesetzblatt 1, p. 1332) are prohibited from acquiring. Possessing, and carrying firearms and ammunition, as well as truncheons or stabbing weapons. Those now possessing weapons and ammunition are at once to turn them over to the local police authority.

§ 2

Firearms and ammunition found in a Jew’s possession will be forfeited to the government without compensation.

But why would Pro-Freedom, Pro-Gun Hitler want to ban not only guns, but impact weapons and stabbing weapons for the possession of Jews???

(For gun banners, that’s a rhetorical question)

Common Argument #3: Citizens have the right to defend themselves against a tyrannical government.

Your Response: There’s no easy way to say this, so let’s just say it: If you believe that your personal firearms are any match for the firepower that the American government has at its disposal, you are deluded. If you believe that any group of private U.S. citizens would be able to accumulate the weaponry necessary to stand up to the U.S. military in an armed conflict, you need to step back, take a deep breath, and acknowledge objective reality.

The U.S. military has, among other things, invisible tanks, hydrogen bombs, one-handed shotguns, blindness rifles, remote-controlled grenade launchers, unmanned drones, and a wave gun so powerful that it’s been nicknamed “The Goodbye Weapon.” You may not like the fact that an armed domestic resistance against the American government would essentially be impossible, but it’s a fact nonetheless. Deregulating gun laws will not change this fact, unless your idea of deregulating gun laws is to make rocket launchers available and affordable to the entire U.S. population.

There’s no easy way to say it, because you’re corollary argument requires an army of fanatically loyal soldiers who are willing to exterminate their own people on their own sovereign soil, likely to defend laws that go against the Constitution they have sworn to uphold and protect.

Further he also ignores the recent military actions against primitive people fighting an asymmetric war. Viet Nam, Iraq (while I consider the installment of Parliament and free elections a “Mission Accomplished” as Bush declared, the next several years of quagmire were NOT a victory), and Afghanistan.

Still we can dip back to the Hitler point. It seems that in modern times a tyrannical government never oppresses and armed population. So the whole “Second Amendment Option” or the “Cartridge Box” part of the Ballot Box, Soap Box, trinity is really a bit of a catch 22 when it comes to this point. We have guns to protect us from an oppressive government, but our government will never oppress us (at least overtly) so long as we have guns, and they know we’ll use them.

Look at Connecticut, they have every right to send in the SWAT teams and collect all the known “Assault Rifles” and “High Capacity Magazines” (which are arms and accessories “in common use”, so I guess they really don’t have ANY right at all) but they are standing down and looking at alternative approaches to round up these formally legal items. Why? Because they know at least ONE of those houses will be a blood bath. Now note I am NOT saying that a person or group of people going toe-to-toe with a SWAT team are going to WIN, and then maybe take over the police department and declare themselves Chief. But that impending full-on fire-fight is NOT something the Police want to do, nor our Military. It just isn’t worth dying for, so they stay their hand.

Common Argument #4: If you outlaw guns, only outlaws will have them.

Your Response: I’m not arguing that we should outlaw guns. I’m saying we should erect legal barriers that make it more difficult for individuals with a higher propensity for violence, such as convicted felons or the mentally ill, to obtain guns.

Look at the National Instant Criminal Background Check System (NICS). It was enacted in 1994 and established, among other things, a centralized database of individuals who are federally prohibited from buying guns — namely, convicted felons, domestic abusers, and fugitives. It’s one of the most significant gun control laws in American history, and since it was put into place, 2.1 million outlaws have been blocked from purchasing guns. So really, gun control does the opposite of your argument.

Man this one is really easy. No it didn’t! NICS does essentially nothing. If there was a medical screen for a deadly disease that had a 95% false positive rate, Doctors would not administer it….even if it would, as the antis say, “Save just one life!” as it would cause horrible harm to most of the lives that took the test.

So you’re not for banning guns, you’re for expanding a system that simply doesn’t work, oh and has a simple work-around. The Black market. Here in Massachusetts we got rid of Private Sales of firearms (they still CALL them “Private Sales” but its as private as a phone booth or ATM stall) and yet the criminals still have guns. The antis say “well they get them in other states!” First no they don’t, and second if they are (and they aren’t) that is also illegal, so why do we need ANOTHER law?

So you don’t want to ban guns, and the solutions you want are proven to not work, does that mean we’re done here?

Common Argument #5: Gun control doesn’t make a country/state/city safer.

Your Response: Actually, most studies suggest that gun laws reduce violence. In the United States, the South consistently has more deaths by assault than any other region. It also has the most lenient gun control laws. A Harvard study from last year showed that between 2007 and 2010, states with fewer gun control laws generally had higher gun-related mortality rates than states with stricter gun control. Another study published in the Journal of the American Medical Association confirmed that finding; and a meta-analysis of other studies, also from Harvard, showed that higher gun ownership rates was correlated with higher homicide rates, both within the U.S. and amongst different high-income countries.

Cherry pick, cherry pick, cherry pick. Well if gun control laws don’t make us safer….why are we safer? Why has violent crime (not just “Gun Death”) be going down for years as we get more guns in more private hands?

The simple solution is you’re wrong, and maybe the fact that they were working hand-in-hand with a gun control group for said study, there might have been some bias?

He then closes with some “Gun Death” hand-wringing, with points that I’ve refuted here pretty heavily.

Overall it was one of the better attempts of an anti-gun person to make a rational argument. He cites his facts (tho maybe he didn’t read them very well), he doesn’t resort to dick jokes, name calling, or outright hyperbole, unless you count the “Murderer carrying a machine gun in prison”, and those bizarre graphics.

Still he doesn’t have a single leg to stand on. It seems the crux of his argument is a faith-based one. He believes America is one of the most dangerous and violent nations in the world. (we’re not), he believes restricting guns is a solution to this. (it isn’t) He believes the NICS system works. (it doesn’t) And he believes that if we stand up for our rights our military will murder us on our own soil.

Didn’t take much effort to refute all his points, but it was a breath of fresh air compared to what comes out of most gun-banner’s talking points.

“Gun Death” Multiple Murder

You won’t hear about this one:

Police found Christina Powell strangled with an electrical cord March 22, 2013, in the basement of her Town of Binghamton home. Her friend, Mario Masciarelli, was found upstairs fatally beaten.

Such a savage murder, but it will be discounted because only “gun deaths” seem to count to the jackals.

LONG Day!

Little LaWeer’da had a good first day at daycare. Such a fun day she couldn’t bear to shut her eyes, so she managed the whole day with just one tiny nap. Still the end result wasn’t too bad.

Still Daddy didn’t have the greatest day, all I could do was think about her, and jump at every little noise I heard in the house. There might have been a few tears.

Still I got her home, we cooked dinner together, then ate with Mrs. Weer’d before bath and bed.

Now that she’s asleep….

yeah Daddy needs a Martini!!!

Images of the Antis: More of that Bogus “School Shooting” Map

I think I need to include Jason’s Comment on this one:

Baldr School Shooting Map

Now this image is pretty close to the one I posted here.

Still I like this image better than the Moms Demand Action because it gives more details.

And by details, most of the citations and blank, I wonder why that is. Further after blank ones the 2nd most plentiful shootings are single-victim. Now remember the article I cited? Yeah those single-victim shootings are mostly suicides that happen on or near school grounds, often not during regular school hours.

Now there are two double-victim shootings, one was the Colorado shooting that was stopped by a resource officer who never fired his gun. The mere SIGHT of a gun triggered the shooter to take a second victim, himself. Again, the officer didn’t fire, and didn’t even say much to him, the guy saw the gun and shot himself. You think he might have considered the school’s “gun free zone” policy before taking that shotgun to school? Do you think this shooting would have went down if the school was like the street just outside where any 21+ Faculty, employee, or visitor might be packing a gun?

And again, the 2nd victim was the suicide of the shooter.

There is one by-the-antis playbook actual mass-school-shooting on the map…in Santa Monica California! Also this wasn’t actually a “School Shooting” either, it was a rampage through the unarmed streets of Santa Monica, and the shooter took his last stand in a college library.

Really this paints quite the different picture than the antis try to weave. First up we know that school shootings aren’t but a drop in the bucket compared to the shootings that happen in our gang-infested cities. This YEAR of shootings adds up to MAYBE two bad weekends in Chicago, DC, LA, New Orleans, or New York. I’m not belittling this violence, tho I might be belittling the late-night suicides in parking lots and grounds that HAPPEN to be schools, one person killing themselves isn’t much of a public safety issue, what I am pointing out that is if we JUST had school shootings we’d be one of the safest nations in the world. Why focus on the small potatoes?

Simple, FEAR! You see the average anti-gun person doesn’t give a shit about gang violence, because they aren’t in gangs and don’t live in the inner cities. The people that live in the inner cities rarely vote, but when they do they pull the lever next to the “D” no matter what. No the people who live in the Lilly-white suburbs are the swing voters, and if you tell them we need “Universal Background checks” or “Bans on High Capacity magazines”, or “Assault Weapons Bans”, or their little snowflake is going to be gunned down by a crazed psycho with a Bushmaster AK-15 .50 cal Machine gun! Now you have their attention.

Attention is what they need. Just look at the involvement with anti-gun groups. Its pitifully small! Their conventions fill a small ball room, and their sponsored laws wither on the vine in all but the most fertile soil, and even then its not likely. So even if their 80 or 90% numbers were correct (I doubt they are) they can’t get anybody to actually STAND UP for them.

Yet these aren’t crazed gunmen shooting up schools filled with little kids and teens. These are mostly suicides, or inner city gang hits. The crazed spree shooters are an anomaly.

As for Jason’s glib comment:

School shootings since Sandy Hook: A Map Like This Doesn’t Exist for Any Other Country in the World

Well they can’t because only this country has a map that includes all our 50 states. And of course if other countries simply made a map of suicides on school grounds, and weren’t concerned about the tool used, I suspect there would be several that would kick our asses, like Japan, and any nation that has a bulk of its land mass above the arctic circle.

The ARES ATF Raid

I’m not going to get into the legality of the raid, or if I think ARES was in compliance or violation of the law, that will come out in time.

What got me was the footage of the raid over at ENDO

So this is a store front that is regularly open for business, and ATF has been in contact with this business enough for them to request a restraining order against the ATF. Further this business does not have and FFL and claims to not be selling firearms.

The question I have right now is Why the damn entry team?

Why did they feel the need to break down the door and storm in with rifles. The store was apparently closed, and would be open later that day. If the warrant is proper, why didn’t they wait until the store was open to serve it, or contact the owner to open early to serve the warrant in a civil fashion?

This is obviously a punitive display of force. Don’t fuck with us or we will destroy your shit. The ATF is telling the people of America “We are NOT your friend, we are your enemy!”

How many times have you read a story of somebody turning themselves in to police. It happens all the time. When the cops have you, they will let you know, and allow you to come in on your own terms rather than resort to nasty and potentially dangerous tasks.

Yet when the cops are no longer serving and protecting the people, they simply do what they think will hurt the most.

Note that all persons are innocent until proven guilty. Even the dude with gang tats and colors with bags of crack in his pockets gets read his Miranda rights, because they are still a citizen. They are still a human being. Now if they chose not to act the part things can get ugly, and within reason I’m 100% fine with that.

In this case they managed to make contact on multiple occasions with the owner with maybe some bad blood, but no bad conduct. They didn’t need an entry team, and they didn’t need to break down the door.

They didn’t NEED to, they just wanted to!

SWAT teams are the standing armies our founding fathers warned us about!

Anti-Gun: Not in My Backyard

You hear it all the time. Some fool anti grouses about how horrible and dangerous guns are, and how they should all be banned. Then the standard retort comes: “What About Police?”

Well the anti will then backpedal that police should have guns because they are so well trained and safe, they can keep their guns.

Well not in Oklahoma:

“Everybody in that building knew who we were,” said Wagoner county sheriff Bob Colbert, who, along with 40 other sheriffs from around the state, converged on the capitol as they do every year to meet and greet and lobby. Until…

“One of the senators, who they wouldn’t tell us, complained because we were armed in the building,” he said.

They were then given a choice, disarm or there’s the door.

“So we all packed up and left,” he said.

Colbert doesn’t know for sure which senator complained, but has his own complaints about the complainer.

“We’re the people that protect these people,” he said.

Got that? Sheriffs should be able to carry guns because we ask them to do icky things like deal with criminals, but when they come to the capital to work with lawmakers in making a better state, they were asked to disarm or leave.

Does this seem like “Common Sense” to you? Yeah, the antis are all about letting us keep our guns! They’re not anti-gun they’re for “Common Sense” safety.

Accidents Happen

Guns are no different than anything else. If improperly used you can get seriously injured. Still this story really disgusts me:

A woman practicing shooting at a local firing range apparently shot herself accidentally this afternoon, according to police.

The victim was rushed to Sturdy Memorial Hospital in Attleboro.

Three firefighters were treating the woman in the back of the ambulance — an indication the injuries likely are serious, police said.

The incident was reported about 2 p.m. at the American Firearms School in the industrial park off John Dietsch Boulevard.

Witnesses said they speculate the woman’s gun may have jammed.

Now this place has been pushing its services HEAVILY in Massachusetts as the place to go to shoot and get firearms training. I actually talked to Jay a few years ago about us possibly seeing if they’d give us some range time in exchange for a little blog press. Neither of us followed up on it.

I have a friend who fired her first gun after using a groupon deal they offered.

This place is CATERING to inexperienced shooters. Now I won’t go so far as say they were negligent, as even my little informal one-on-one classes there’s always the possibility that somebody could COMPLETELY unplug their brain and do some damage, but that’s really slight, as I tend to stand beside my new shooter and watch only the gun while they shoot. They often ask how their groups look after a string, and I tell them I have no idea, but I can tell they’re marking paper by how they pull the trigger, and I can also tell if they’re getting tired and need a break, and will often call a cease fire mid-string if their form starts getting sloppy. This standing position allows me to quickly grab the gun if they even come CLOSE to breaking the 180 at the range.

Still brand new shooters should NOT be clearing jams, and should be forbidden to do so even if they think they can get that gun running again. New shooters should be concentrating on safety, form, safety, marking paper, trigger pull, safety, and safety for their first trip to the range, and probably several subsequent ones.

Who knows if the “clearing a jam” part of the story is legit, but I can see it. A person not strong enough to easily manipulate the slide turning the gun in an unsafe direction, and add in the nasty habit of leaving a finger on the trigger could easily cause a negligent discharge. Why that should get to that point on a hot firing line is REALLY bad news.

**UPDATE** It appears that sadly the woman has died….

Next up is a little bit of an anti-gun spin:

In 2012, more people were seriously hurt by accidental gunshots in Washington state than in any previous year in nearly a generation.

Hospitals here admitted 122 people with “unintentional firearm” injuries that year, the latest for which data is available. Hundreds more were treated in emergency rooms but not admitted. More still were wounded in accidents that were not classified as such.

This is a secondary saw of the antis. You see accidental firearm “Gun Death” isn’t very high. It was only 7 (SEVEN) in the same year, and this isn’t any higher or lower than other years.

Also while 2012 wasn’t a good year for firearms injuries, this isn’t a trend, but a data-point, and statistically it isn’t much change from any other year.

Also the story is loaded with anecdotal stories rather than a larger look at the accidents. How many of these were people illegally owning guns for illegal vocations? Hell they spend their time talking about young kids getting a hold of poorly secured guns, but note the mode age is 22.

Agenda?

They also note that some of the accidents result in criminal charges. Hey but we NEED to do SOMETHING.

Yeah we need to properly secure our firearms when there are kids about, and by that I mean don’t leave them around loaded. A young child will not be able to defeat a simple lock, or even load an unloaded gun! And we need to be better about drumming the 4-rules of gun safety into new shooters, or even experienced shooters who should know better!

Be safe out there! Accidents do happen, and sadly we will never be rid of negligent firearms accidents, but we can do a lot to prevent many of them…and frankly we are!

These Are Fun Videos

Love how the gunsmith kinda feels them differently than I might.

And love the reaction from the last one.

Still the last “practical tip” bit is partially bullshit. Unless you keep a shoebox filled with guns by your bedside, you won’t need to do what these guys are doing. They’re doing this for fun and bragging rights, and to make fun videos.

Still there is a solid point that you should know all your go-to guns inside and out, night and day. This is also a good reason to keep your carry and home defense stable trim. There are some folks who carry a different gun every day for variety and style. I tend to pick a couple of good ones for distinct reasons, and then carry those and keep the rest for range time and teaching new shooters.
