Appeal, and Hopefully a Victory

I was saddened when he was convicted. Hopefully it will be sucessfully appealed!

An Army soldier convicted in November of a misdemeanor count of interfering with the duties of a police officer for carrying an assault rifle while hiking with his teenage son plans to appeal the decision.

The Army Times, citing the Temple Daily Telegram, reports an attorney for U.S. Army Master Sgt. Christopher Grisham has filed a notice of his intent to appeal in a case that has attracted the interest of gun advocates nationwide.

The attorney, Blue Rannefeld, reportedly asserted in the motion that the prosecution’s claims were not supported by the evidence.

KWTX-TV News reports jurors convicted Grisham – a soldier stationed at Ford Hood in Texas – on Nov. 20 of the class-B crime, which carries a fine not to exceed $2,000 and a jail sentence of not more than 180 days.

Grisham was arrested while hiking with his 15-year-old son, who was working on the requirements for a Boy Scout badge.

Grisham was carrying an AR-15 rifle and a concealed handgun, for which he had a permit. Texas law allows for rifles to be carried in public.

Someone reportedly called police expressing alarm over a man carrying a rifle along a road. Officer Steve Ermis responded and, according to court testimony, was initially concerned because he didn’t know Grisham’s intentions.

His intentions have nothing to do with the law. What he was doing was 100% legal, so no conviction should be held. Further he conducted himself very well during his arrest and criminal disarmament. Meanwhile the police did nothing of the sort.

Note at 3:00 how the nice police officer sweeps him with his own weapon. This was a terrible case, and hopefully the Master Sargent will be vindicated.

That’s the Neat Thing About Fiction

James Bond: Alcoholic.

Vodka martini, “shaken not stirred” – often said as part of a bad Sean Connery impersonation – is one of the most quotable lines from Bond.

Yet Her Majesty’s top secret agent’s love of the bottle would leave him impotent and at death’s door.

Doctors analysing the Ian Fleming novels show James Bond polishes off the equivalent of one and a half bottles of wine every day.

“He’s a very glamorous person, he gets all the girls and that’s totally incompatible with the lifestyle of an alcoholic.”

Patrick Davies paediatric intensive care consultant

They say he is not the man to trust to deactivate a nuclear bomb.

Doctors in Derby and Nottingham sat down to read the 14 Bond novels in their spare time.

With a notebook at hand they charted every day and every drink.

Excluding the 36 days Bond was in prison, hospital or rehab, the spy downed 1,150 units of alcohol in 88 days.

It works out at 92 units a week – about five vodka martinis a day and four times the recommended maximum intake for men in the UK.

James Bond also Smoked like a chimney, at three-and-a-half packs of smokes a day in the Flemming Novels. The later iterations of Bond by more contemporary novelists have turned Bond’s drinking, smoking, and drug use down to reflect the times. In Carte Blanche the post 9-11 007 is not a non-smoker, and while he enjoys a stiff drink a little more than the next guy, he doesn’t seem to be dropping the stuff as madly as the Flemming books suggest.

Also all one needs to do is look at images Flemming commissioned, and how Bond is described in the books. Tall, lean, with dark hair and sharp features, really James Bond is a idealized Ian Flemming. Both of them share similar paths, and worked as a spy. Bond first was seen carrying a Beretta .25 because that’s what Flemming carried on his intelligence work. If Flemming wanted to go the plastic surgery route and correct his more unattractive features, I would be amazed if he didn’t choose to change his face to look more like that of James Bond.

Of course Flemming’s work in the military wasn’t nearly as exciting as Bond’s because Flemming was a real man. Also Flemming was a well-documented drunk and was almost always seen with a lit cigarette. Flemming died from complications of too much smoke and drink.

James Bond meanwhile gets shot, stabbed, and tortured on an alarmingly frequent schedule, and keeps bouncing back. That’s why its called “Fantasy”.

Of course this is a greatly common instance. We have stories of massive accountant who is also a skilled shooter fighting monsters.

We have a retired air force marine engineer who is tall, with dark hair and green eyes who carries a 1911 and loves classic cars.

I was going to type more, but I could spend all day talking about pulp novelists who write about characters who could be considered idealized versions of themselves. James Bond is no different.

You Wonder Why They’re Against Voter ID…

Non-Citizens Caught voting in elections:

Ohio Secretary of State Jon Husted announced Wednesday that his office found 17 non-citizens illegally cast ballots in the 2012 presidential election — and has referred the case for possible prosecution.

The alleged crime would be a notable case of voter fraud in a key swing state. By law, only American citizens are allowed the privilege of casting ballots for the nation’s leaders.

Ohio officials say that did not stop some from getting around the system.

“I have a responsibility to uphold election law, and under both federal and state law you must be a citizen to vote,” said Husted, a Republican who has aggressively tried to investigate voter fraud cases in his state.

Husted also found that 274 non-citizens remain on the voting rolls.

This issue cannot be eliminated. Identity Theft is a common thing, and that can just as easily be used to make a non-eligible voter vote, or allow somebody to vote multiple times. But to do this would make it an even more serious crime, and therefor more of a deterrent. Currently “Progressives” claim that voter ID laws are a “Poll Tax” and are “Racist”…but state IDs could easily be subsidized for cheap, and it would crack down on these crimes which are vastly more widespread than these 274 cases. I suspect the opposition has an ulterior motive.

President Obama beat Mitt Romney in Ohio by just 2 percentage points in November 2012.

And the plot thickens:

As part of Ohio’s efforts to clean up the voting rolls, election officials discovered that more than 257,000 dead people were still listed as active voters. Their names and status, Husted said, have since been removed.

In addition, election authorities note they have drastically reduced the number of duplicate registrations, from 340,000 in 2011 to just four this past November — and that more than 370,000 Ohio voters who have moved have been contacted to update their voting information.

That’s a LOT of fraudulent names in the registries! That’s also not counting the made-up people that were placed on the rolls by “Progressive” criminal organizations like ACORN. I wonder how many of these half-million bunk voters cast votes? I think we all know what party they voted for!

“Gun Death” Bottle

Also a good example of “No Good Deed Goes Unpunished”

A fight with a woman during a bout of drinking left an 86-year-old man dead early Tuesday morning after the Good Samaritan had let him stay in her house in northeast Houston as the mercury plunged overnight….Police said a 60-year-old woman, whose name has not been released, allowed Badillo to stay in her home Monday night because of the cold weather. They were drinking alcohol together and got into an argument.

Police said the battle of words escalated into a fight, with Badillo hitting the woman in the face with a bottle. The woman then grabbed the bottle and smashed Badillo with it.

Both Badillo and the woman had injuries to their faces and heads. They were rushed to Memorial Hermann hospital, where Badillo was later pronounced dead.

Hard to say if this was self-defense or just straight up manslaughter, but the cause of death is alcohol, both the substance, and the container. So not a “Gun Death”. Does this mean that Prohibition and all its joys was “Common Sense”?

Also I know people who try to help panhandlers and drifters, its always a bad idea. When you meet somebody in a bad place with no friends and family to turn to, its likely because they burned every bridge with every person that ever loved them. You think as a stranger you’d fare better?

Carpet Bagger Go Home!

I have a pretty deep hatred of Scott Brown. He campaigned as a strong conservative in Massachusetts and he WON!

Unfortunately he broke every promise he made, and cut hard Left. So hard left that he makes John McCain and Mitt Romney look like a Republican. To further show his stupidity as a politician he got his ass kicked by far-left no-talent nanny-stater Elizabeth Warren. You give the people a choice between a fake Democrat, and a real Democrat, they’ll elect the Real Democrat every time. See also above mentioned John McCain and Mitt Romney.

Now he’s trying to inflict his crappy brand on New Hampshire, and thankfully the Granite State seems to be on their game.

Scott Brown attracted more than 125 pro-gun conservatives to a GOP holiday party here Thursday night — but they came to protest his appearance, not to hear him speak.

The spectacle — protesters outnumbered activists who coughed up $50 to see Brown — was a stark illustration of the treacherous political terrain facing the 54-year-old New Hampshire transplant if he launches a Senate bid that’s looking more likely by the day.

Have a look at the videos of the protest here. Boots on the ground reports are saying the numbers were closer to 300 than the reported 150.

New Hampshire deserves better than the horrible Scott Brown.

Nanny State: E-Cigs

Gotta love the nanny state!

I really like the point that they are sequestering people choosing the less harmful product of electronic cigarettes to the smoking sections outside where they are exposed to 2nd Hand Smoke. This is nothing more than an anti-smoking witch hunt, given that e-cigarettes don’t emit second hand smoke and are not known to be carcinogenic.

Still I don’t know if carte blanche should be given to electronic vapor users as the devices DO contain nicotine and other chemicals and what CAN be inhaled by people passing by is not fully understood.

Sadly with the devices being treated in this fashion, I wonder if it will ever be properly studied, or dealt with objectively. Certainly as they become more popular I’m seeing more and more people standing among the conventional smokers in the ever-more isolating smoking areas emitting their vapors and their LED light.

Great Series!

So I just finished “Lucky 13” which is a short story from the Terms of Enlistment Series by none-other than Marko “Munchkin Wrangler”/ “Major Caudill” Kloos. I must say I am DYING for his latest “Lines of Departure” to drop later next month.

I will be honest “Terms of Enlistment” felt a LOT to me like the great film “Full Metal Jacket”, not just in the obvious comparisons, but also like the film I deeply love the first half, and just enjoy the 2nd. This has nothing to do with the subject matter or the writing style, just the first half left a few details I noticed un-attended to as the story progressed.

Still “Measures of Absolution” dabbled in, but in no way resolved some of those details.

Yep, Marko, you got me hooked!

Give them a read if you’re into Sci-Fi and/or Military fiction. Tho honestly I LIKE both those genres but they aren’t what generally read, which is a ringing endorsement as well!

“Gun Death” Another Car as a Murder Weapon

Also Bizarre:

Authorities say a motorist who got into a fight with people whose car had overturned is suspected of later running down and killing one of them in Colorado…The death came after a vehicle slid off the road and overturned. The three people inside flagged down passing motorists for assistance and said Plouvier refused to give them a ride and drove off.

Trooper Josh Lewis said the three people kept trying to get help until one was struck and killed.

Hey, man, but cars are different than guns, because “Progressives” use cars to move around!

Male Nipples

This is a neat one:

Yep we were all ladies once…kinda. All babies will turn out female unless the baby turned male by male hormones. This is why XY people with androgen insensitivity syndrome manifest themselves as more-or-less normal females, and actually have a higher incidence of heterosexuality than traditional XX Females with full hormonal sensitivity. In other words they are genetically male, but due to an insensitivity with male sex hormones they manifest as female because that’s how babies develop.

Also while I’m unaware of the name of this trait, males have what I like to call a “Vestigial Vulva”, which is that “Seam” that runs from the tip of the penis down the underside and across the scrotum. This is where the vaginal opening of the developed fetus closes up.

Pretty, cool, huh?

“Gun Death” WTF?

Ok, Bob said this one was weird...he wasn’t kidding.

Shamanique Bryant, 28, allegedly rear-ended another car early Saturday morning. In doing so, the force somehow threw 24-year-old Mattie Quellen Stubbs from the passenger seat of Bryant’s vehicle, according to The Cleveland Plain Dealer.

Bryant fled the scene, but stopped a few blocks away to perform CPR on a man in the back of the 2001 Alero she was driving. The man, according to the Plain Dealer, was suffering from a gunshot wound inflicted upon him at a club earlier that evening.

Bryant then allegedly drove back in the direction of the earlier accident and ran over Stubbs.

So she hits a car, then flees. She stops to give first aid to the shooting victim in her back seat…then she returns to her previous accident and murders the man ejected from the car by running over him.

WTF????

H/T Bob
