“Gun Death” Suffocation

Brutal:

A neighbor found their bodies a week ago.

Gladys Del Carmen Sierra, 29, had been stuffed into a closet in her Miami home with her two daughters, aged 4 and 6. They’d all been suffocated to death….He locked the girls in a bedroom while he suffocated his wife with a plastic bag and then sexually assaulted her, police said.

He let one daughter out of the bedroom, police said, and suffocated her with a plastic bag; then found the other daughter and did the same while she slept. Police said he then sexually assaulted the first girl.

Their bodies then sat in the closet long enough that a smell drew the attention of a neighbor, police said.

What a monster! What a horrible story! Why would we talk about “Gun Death” as if somehow if he had SHOT his family it would be worse? Why would we talk about rates of “Gun Death”, as if MORE crimes like this would be preferable to shooting crimes?

We must not let people cite “Gun Death” as if its relevant! We must not let people ignore this crime, just so people can push their agenda!

Conflicting Reports

David Gregory flashed a 30-round STANAG magazine on Meet the Press, which is filmed in DC. That magazine is a felony in the District. There was talk about Gregory facing criminal charges…now there’s talk he isn’t:

An official from the D.C. police told a member of the Federal Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives that David Gregory COULD display a high capacity magazine on “Meet the Press” Sunday … TMZ has learned.

Well-placed law enforcement sources tell TMZ … a staffer from “Meet the Press” called ATF before the show aired to inquire about the legality of David holding the empty magazine during a segment on gun control. We’re told the ATF person contacted the D.C. police to find out if the District of Columbia — the place where the show is broadcast — had a law prohibiting such a display.

Our sources say the D.C. police official informed ATF David could legally show the magazine, provided it was empty. An ATF official then called the staffer from “Meet the Press” to inform them they could use the magazine.

D.C. police released a statement today, saying “NBC contacted the Metropolitan Police Dept. inquiring if they could utilize a high capacity magazine for this segment. NBC was informed that possession of a high capacity magazine is not permissible and the request was denied.”

Now one other thing we need to look at, besides the obvious bullshit that the law might be overlooked so long as an anti-rights dog-and-pony show is underway, is the potential for Gregory facing felony charges and possible jail time.

He’s a smarmy asshole, but is it reasonable to level such charges for simple possession of a piece of folded sheet-aluminum?

**UPDATE** WizardPC has an interesting observation over at Uncle’s:

Interesting that no one at nbc or mpd knew that for three days.

Retroactive permission?

This is a VERY good point, if NBC and Meet The Press were knowledgeable of the seriousness of possessing a normal-capacity magazine on national TV, and actively sought out a dispensation, why didn’t they, or MPD mention this when the press calls started coming in?

I suspect somebody made a phone call to avoid the charges because the propaganda was worth it. Either way, it shows that the laws are stupid and cause harm to harmless people, or shows that “Progressives” have no interest in following their own laws.

Gun laws, at their heart are unreasonable, and turn lawful citizens with no criminal intent into criminals.

They Aren’t Comming For Your Guns

That’s what the antis have been telling us:

Joan also doubled down on her tweet mentioned here on her blog.

So what’s the alternative? Bring back the assault weapons ban, and bring it back with some teeth this time. Ban the manufacture, importation, sale, transfer and possession of both assault weapons and high-capacity magazines. Don’t let people who already have them keep them. Don’t let ones that have already been manufactured stay on the market. I don’t care whether it’s called gun control or a gun ban. I’m for it.

And of course Joan’s own words are pro-confiscation.

Now Coumo speaks for himself, as does the Arizona judge. But Joan is both a representative of the Joyce Foundation, and the Brady Campaign, both organizations that will likely be submitted bills or criteria to the anti-rights politicians. Notice that Joan hasn’t be reprimanded or silenced. The Brady Campaign and the Joyce Foundation are failing, but given the small number anti-rights bloggers working for them, and the small amount of content they produce, I find it hard to believe they aren’t reading these posts about confiscation.

Another thing to think about is the proposed ban on private sale. This would likely mean that all sales would be on paper and submitted to the ATF, which could constitute a firearms registry.

We need to be VERY wary of this, as registries do nothing to stop crime, or prosecute criminals. What they DO very well, is set up a system for confiscation down the road. So even if they don’t manage to float confiscation this time around, they might make it one step easier NEXT time.

Be Cautious! They ARE coming for your guns.

“Gun Deaths” Guns and Cars

When discussing gun ownership with somebody who meant well, but was standing for banning guns. They said “Well I’m fine with YOU owning guns, but I don’t know about letting any old random dude own a gun”. I pointed out that just about everybody has access to cars, and they drive by you every day.

One person was killed and another was hurt when a car crashed onto a sidewalk and into them in Quincy Monday morning.

Police say the driver of the car that struck the two people was taken into custody at the scene….Rivard has a long record of driving violations dating back to 1990, including several accidents where he was found at fault, speeding, and driving with suspended and revoked licenses.

First up you’ll never find such negligence and bad behavior with firearms treated the same way if this was done with guns. Doesn’t matter if its Maine, Texas, New York, or California.

Really its not the tool, its the person. Lots of people have access to easy ways to end another person’s life. That person waiting in line in front of you? Well you could crack them in the head with a hammer, and likely kill them. The people on the sidewalk could be plowed down with a car or truck. That healthy meal you serve your family can be laced with deadly toxins.

Killing another person is mechanically and physically VERY EASY! As we learned from Dave Grossman’s fantastic book that for the majority of us it is EMOTIONALLY very hard, if not impossible.

Anti-gun people think that allowing guns to be bought, sold, and carried in public would be putting death around every corner. What the “Gun Death?” Files tell us is that death IS around every corner, but most people have no interest in causing harm in others.

And the handful of people who DO wish to harm others, well they’ll do what they can to cause death and mayhem…and when they do, its a nice time to have a gun.

Morning Junk Science

Gotta love the Church of Global Warming!

COLUMBUS, Ohio – In a discovery that raises further concerns about the future contribution of Antarctica to sea level rise, a new study finds that the western part of the ice sheet is experiencing nearly twice as much warming as previously thought.

The temperature record from Byrd Station, a scientific outpost in the center of the West Antarctic Ice Sheet (WAIS), demonstrates a marked increase of 4.3 degrees Fahrenheit (2.4 degrees Celsius) in average annual temperature since 1958 – that is, three times faster than the average temperature rise around the globe….“We’ve already seen enhanced surface melting contribute to the breakup of the Antarctic’s Larsen B Ice Shelf, where glaciers at the edge discharged massive sections of ice into the ocean that contributed to sea level rise,” Monaghan said. “The stakes would be much higher if a similar event occurred to an ice shelf restraining one of the enormous WAIS glaciers.”

Sounds horrible! Let’s look at their work!

Researchers consider the WAIS especially sensitive to climate change, explained Ohio State University doctoral student Julien Nicolas. Since the base of the ice sheet rests below sea level, it is vulnerable to direct contact with warm ocean water. Its melting currently contributes 0.3 mm to sea level rise each year – second to Greenland, whose contribution to sea level rise has been estimated as high as 0.7 mm per year.

Again 0.3mm??? How does one get these ultra-small measurements for something that is so dynamic as seal level. Also note these are the same people who predict island chains disappearing, and coastal cities being flooded.

Due to its location some 700 miles from the South Pole and near the center of the WAIS, Byrd Station is an important indicator of climate change throughout the region.

Tell me more!

In the past, researchers haven’t been able to make much use of the Byrd Station measurements because the data was incomplete; nearly one third of the temperature observations were missing for the time period of the study. Since its establishment in 1957, the station hasn’t always been occupied. A year-round automated station was installed in 1980, but it has experienced frequent power outages, especially during the long polar night, when its solar panels can’t recharge.

Bromwich and two of his graduate students, along with colleagues from NCAR and the University of Wisconsin-Madison, corrected the past Byrd temperature measurements and used corrected data from a computer atmospheric model and a numerical analysis method to fill in the missing observations.

Ahh, so they’re dealing with an unreliable, and incomplete data set…but they have those correction numbers! Wouldn’t at all be possible those numbers would be adjusted to reflect better grant funding, would they?

The end is obviously Neigh! And its all our fault, don’t you know!

More Background Check Delays in the News

In Colorado:

A spike in requests for background checks on firearms buyers in Colorado has overwhelmed the system that businesses use to track how long the checks will take.

The Colorado Bureau of Investigation’s online wait-time clock for background checks tops out at 99 hours and 59 minutes. The Denver Post reports the wait is now more than 100 hours, leaving potential buyers to guess on exact wait times.

The checks once took minutes, but request for background checks spiked after the school shooting in Newtown, Conn.

Do you think this issue will get better, or worse if the antis make private sales illegal? And think of what “Worse” could be, the whole system could go down for days, or be taken down by executive order.

And don’t forget the Clinton Crackdown on FFLs! This doesn’t count if a person has to drive for hours and hours just to get to an FFL where they can do the paperwork.

Also note the same people talking about banning private sales, as the same people who say requiring a photo ID to vote is “Voter Suppression”.

The “Assault Weapons” ban issue has gotten a LOT of press, but it is also well documented to be pure foolishness, private-sale bans are less documented, and I see as a bigger potential threat.

We need to be ready!

Armed Teachers

This is a pretty interesting story:

Classroom teachers could stop school shootings by carrying concealed weapons, say gun-rights advocates who plan to offer the required training Thursday for 200 Utah teachers.

The Utah Shooting Sports Council said it would waive its $50 fee for concealed-weapons training for the teachers. Instruction featuring plastic guns is set to begin at noon Thursday inside a conference room at Maverick Center, a hockey arena in the Salt Lake City suburb of West Valley.

It’s an idea gaining traction in the aftermath of the Connecticut school shooting. In Ohio, the Buckeye Firearms Association said it was launching a test program in tactical firearms training for 24 teachers initially.

Now this is some reaction to the school shooting, but its nothing new.

Educators say Utah legislators left them with no choice but to accept some guns in schools. State law forbids schools, districts or college campuses from trying to impose their own gun restrictions.

Odd how we haven’t heard about any of this crap going down in Utah? Don’t the antis say that such laws make things MORE dangerous? Yet another “Blood in the Streets” prediction.

Now teachers aren’t cops, SWAT teams, or tactical ninjas, still I agree with this sentiment:

“We’re not suggesting that teachers roam the halls” for an armed intruder, said Aposhian, chairman of the Utah Shooting Sports Council, the state’s leading gun lobby. “They should lock down the classroom. But a gun is one more option if the shooter” breaks into a classroom.

In think we all read the the accounts of the Sandy Hook principal rushing into the classroom to help her students. She was simply gunned down. It was a heroic act, but she was defenseless by law. The law is also the reason why this prick chose a school, lots of bodies packed into a small space, and no guns until the police arrive. Like all these shooters he died with ammo on him, but the police had shown up, so his moment to shine was over, and he took his life like the coward he was.

“It’s a terrible idea,” said Carol Lear, a chief lawyer for the Utah Office of Education, who argues teachers could be overpowered for their guns or misfire or cause an accidental shooting. “It’s a horrible, terrible, no-good, rotten idea.”

Yep, and all those predictions haven’t happened, and will continue not to happen. Anti-rights activists love to talk about worst case scenarios that never happen…while ignoring criminals who illegally acquired guns, broke dozens of laws, and have no qualms about committing wanton acts of murder cornering unarmed teachers who have nothing to do but wait for the police to show up.

In the case of Sandy Hook, the response time was 20 mins. Hey but let’s talk about what-if scenarios that haven’t happened, while ignoring events that happen with eerie similarity!

You Think it Was The Gun?

Some interesting details on the jerk who ambushed the firefighters responding to a blaze he set:

The ex-con turned sniper who killed two firefighters wanted to make sure his goodbye note was legible, typing out his desire to “do what I like doing best, killing people” before setting the house where he lived with his sister ablaze, police said.

A convicted felon! What he do?

William Spengler, 62, who served 17 years in prison for manslaughter in the 1980 hammer slaying of his grandmother,

So the “Assault weapon” only managed to double his previous score, looks like his sister was killed in the fire. Thankfully this beast took his own life, so we won’t be letting him out again. I’m kinda curious on how you get manslaughter when you kill an old woman with a hammer. I suspect it was yet another plea deal that brings murderers right back to our doorsteps.

Hey, but when monsters like this are allowed to roam about, why not blame to tool? Oh wait, are we calling for “Common Sense” Gasoline and matches control? Oh, so ONLY blame the tool that you have a political axe to grind about!

Oh and since the antis are going all “Assault Weapon” Banny, I thought I’d quote from the article:

But his intent was unmistakable when he left his flaming home carrying a pump-action shotgun, a .38-caliber revolver and a .223-caliber semiautomatic Bushmaster rifle with flash suppression, the same make and caliber weapon used in the elementary school massacre in Newtown, Conn., that killed 26.

To be fair I suspect the Connecticut rifle was ban-compliant by not having the flash suppressor, which is one of those “Evil Features”….you know because cops can’t see where the shots are coming from or something….

The first police officer who arrived chased and exchanged shots with Spengler, recounting it later over his police radio.

“I could see the muzzle blasts comin’ at me. … I fired four shots at him. I thought he went down,” the officer said.

Huh, in broad daylight with a house fire going on! Its almost like the AWB of 94 was total bullshit!
