Product Review: CRKT Ultima

A few months ago I picked up a CRKT Ultima a Knifecenter.com FYI if you’re interested in this unit, its discontinued, tho they still make the smaller size.

I talked about it here on how little I used it, and what a shame that was.

Well then we got a new dehumidifier which came in a big heavy double-walled cardboard box. I decided to hack up that box and Damn the big heavy blade with a razor sharp edge worked like a charm. So when Vector got his daughter a swing set and had a HUGE collection of big sturdy shipping boxes in his basement I decided to haul over my Ultima and give it a go.

OK so for transporting it I stuck it in the provided sheath. OK CRKT, here’s my big complaint. You made a nice fighting/survival knife, and then you go and ship it with this huge ninja-bait dropleg sheath. The knife is big, its HUGE in this bulky thing. You couldn’t have just made a simple belt sheath?

OK so onto the knife. There was a ton of cardboard and over the course of the cutting the blade held up well. It was showing signs of dullness towards the end. This wasn’t unreasonable, but it did seem a might sooner than other utility knives I use. I’ve heard this is on account of the Ultima using softer steel to better resist chipping and breaking under heavy use. Still softer steel means shorter edge life, but quicker sharpening. When I got home I slapped it on a ceramic stone a few times and it quickly returned to a razor’s edge. I imagine in the field if you had a piece of steel or the back of another knife you could probably strop a reasonable edge back with little effort.

Now the handle is bit of wonder there. It feels VERY comfortable when holding it, but the moment the knife starts to slide out of your hand it digs in and you get your grip back VERY aggressively. Overall this is comfortable both physically and in your confidence in your grip. Tho by the end of the session my hand was a bit raw. This is definitely a hard-use knife, not a hobby knife. This is the type of knife I wouldn’t mind using around the camp fire or on the deck of a rolling boat, but not something I’d want to use all day cutting brush as I imagine my hand might be REALLY raw. I will also note that I dislike those heavily checkered guns that are en-vogue these days as they’re uncomfortable in my hands, so maybe its just how my hands roll.

Oh and one more thing, note at the end of the blade tang CRKT put in a prying tool. That’s a good idea! First you’ll be less likely to use the blade to pry things, and also you have a bottle opener opposite a razor sharp knife! What’s the worst that could happen?

Seriously its a really nice knife! Check it out!

Good Drink Recipe

And interesting as it cannot be called a “Soft Drink” but frankly there is so little alcohol in it that you body likely can process the alcohol faster than you can drink it.

Fill a glass with ice and add a generous splash of Angostura bitters then fill the glass with Polar Orange Dry Soda which is something you non New-Englanders are missing out on, this stuff is damn tasty.

With the addition of bitters, its INSANE good. Also the drink gets a really cool amber color. I think I’ll pour myself another!

Sorted By Size

Another Great video by Hickok45

be interested to hear more back-story from say Tam, on how the frames got their names and how many extinct frames existed. I know from her writing that the No. 1 S&W was a tiny bastard, but was this an “A Frame”?

Nice to see a comprehensive guide to the different frame sizes, also I was really amused at his quip about “Somebody in S&W not counting right” when it came to the 7-shot 686+. LOL we talked about that stuff before, and of course its neat to see what a good shot he is.

Still when I shoot revolvers its almost always in double-action, and I won’t lie, I cringe a little to see him constantly thumbing the hammer.

Dunno what his motives are, as he shoots that 642 (the gun I happen to be carrying right now, and a gun that is a nasty little cuss to shoot) like a champ, I don’t see why he suddenly needs to thumb back the hammer on that 686+ because it probably has a much better trigger anyway.

I just happen to REALLY like the feel of a DA trigger pull.

Flim Review: Harry Brown

Watched this the other day on Netflix Instant View.
Essentially the whole movie is in that trailer. So yet another movie trailer where all the good parts were put up before the film opened. Still if you like what you see there, and could stand to see some more. Go watch it.

Has all the great themes that I talk about here. Gangs ruling the streets in the open, toothless police, and good people disarmed and terrorized and losing faith in the system. Oh and despite rampant gun control, the criminals still seem to be armed to the teeth.

Its a very dark film, and not at all uplifting. Some of these good-man turned badass-vigilante films manage to shoe-horn in a sappy ending, but this one seems to go a more believable direction and tone.

So some good violence, some dark hopeless grit, and some good political points about the filthy underbelly of organized street crime, and big city police.

I really liked it, go check it out.

Also I’ll close with this:

These are my only nits. Harry makes himself sound like some weapons expert but really the Walther P38 in question didn’t fail to function because it had been abused, but because it was never loaded, and Harry shoots like shit, and looks like an amateur when handling a firearm. Also lastly if you have an unarmed drug dealer dying of a gut wound, and you’re planning on torching his little hydroponic grow operation anyway, why waste a bullet on finishing him off? Not like they have Cabella’s in London!

How Gun Control Works

In the wake of the 4th of July I’m hearing no stories of injuries of the countless people who were illegally firing of fireworks. My town had a great show, and after that I stayed up for a few hours to watch the Amateurs put on a further show. Of course the high-paid pros fucked up pretty bad.

Now in gun control heaven, Boston Massachusetts we had a bloody weekend.

Five people were shot in three incidents in Boston today, adding to the mayhem of a long holiday weekend that resulted in 11 shootings.

As of late tonight, none of the victims had died, but two men had suffered life-threatening injuries, police said.

Note in Massachusetts you need to first complete a safety training course and get a series of extensive background checks as well as pay a $100 fee before you can even buy or own a firearm. Permits are issued at the discretion of the local police chief, and specifically the Chief in Boston is highly uncooperative about issuing permits to lawful citizens. Furthermore any handgun you buy must be on the approved “Safety Roster” which of course has nothing to do with safety and everything about banning guns. Also magazines that hold more than 10 rounds or are considered an “Assault Weapon” are illegal unless they were made before 1994. Also all guns are registered with the state, as are all lawful private sales. Furthermore before you can submit to you NICS check you must submit a fingerprint to a digital scanner.

Obviously we need more gun control, because guns are the reason why all these violent acts are happening in the City of massive gun control under the rule of Mayors against Illegal Guns Co-Chair Tom “Mumbles” Menino.

Gun control is nothing but a failed ideology. Treat it as such.

**UPDATE** Go read this post from Old NFO and if I may quote myself:

The antis always say there will be blood in the streets.

They never seem to notice its THEIR streets, and not the streets filled with lawful gun owners.

“Gun Death” Spanking

The story says “spanking”, but I think “Beating” is more appropriate.

Nicholas Williams was arrested last week after police say he spanked his 2-year-old daughter so hard that she died, MyFoxAustin reports.

I can’t imagine paddling somebody on the ass enough to kill them. Still in the end it isn’t a “Gun Death” so why bother worrying, because only “Gun Death” is relevant, right?

More 90s Gun Propiganda

A continuation of this piece. The wife and I were watching Swingers, overall a decent and funny movie but it was an Independent film written by a New Yorker living in LA in the 1999s so it had this scene.

(Pardon the video, skip to 7:20 for the scene in question)

Super-duper top-shelf Anti-gun strawman propaganda. First if you’ve seen the film “Sue” (a boy named Sue, I wonder if that was intentional?) starts out as a generally sympathetic character that is constantly teased by the others and doesn’t seem to be able to, nor have much desire to retort.

Then this scene. He gets shoulder-checked by some punk who obviously is just interested in throwing his weight around to total strangers. Sue calls the guy an asshole, which isn’t all that uncalled for, given that it is the truth. Asshole, being an asshole starts to pick a fight, Sue doesn’t back down, and when the heat gets turned on he pulls what apears to be a S&W 659 (one of the many hat-tips to Terrintino’s Reservoir Dogs) and points it gangster-style until they run away.

Friends get pissed and abandon him. Its obvious his carrying a gun has ruined their fun night. He then justifies pulling the gun for the sake of their “Rep”, and one of the more interesting lines of dialogue come up. Sue justifies packing a piece as a thing one does if you’re from LA. Favreau’s character (named “Mike” but let’s face it this is a semi-autobiographical film) mentions that in LA you can avoid danger easily which doesn’t sound possible in his opinion in New York and he talks about his “Good Neighborhood”.

So let’s have a breakdown of the scene. First while Sue doesn’t exactly pick a fight, he’s give ample opportunity to back down. When he does pull his weapon he justifies the action for the sake of his and his friend’s reputation.

I’ll add to this by dropping a personal story. Shortly after I first got my carry permit I was caught behind a total asshole driver. He was going too slow, was constantly flipping on his blinker and even ran a red light. Finally I was parked behind him at another red light and when it turned green he didn’t move. I started leaning on my horn.

He simply drove off, and thankfully in a different direction than I. The Mrs. told me I shouldn’t have lost my cool like that, and asked what I would have done if he had gotten out of his car. I mentioned I was carrying a gun…and then I thought about it. The guy might get out of his car to pick a fight, but if I pull my gun on him I’d be doing it to use lethal force. Now somebody getting out of a car in the middle of the street most often is indeed something that could come to a violent end, but in this case he’d be coming out because I was goading him. If I ever pull my weapon there will be a Police Report, no ifs-ands-or-butts, do I really want that on a report?

So he pulls a gun not because he’s afraid of multiple larger men acting violent, but because he doesn’t want to be seen as a “Bitch”. There’s a common strawman, that gun owners will shoot somebody because of an argument or disagreement, or over a traffic accident or a parking space. The data never supports them, but they can make it happen in movies, so its ALMOST like its real.

Also note this happened in LA in the 90s. You think he had a CCW permit? You’ll not he didn’t have a holster for his gun (that can’t be comfortable with an all-stainless gun like that) nor does he bother to pull his jacket over the gun when he first tucks it back in his pants. In the next cut the gun is “Covered”, probably simply returned to the prop department. Its stated he grew up in Anaheim which is in Orange County which according to this source is Shall Issue, but of course Anti-Gun people never actually think of the laws, they just think of implications. Nobody asks if he has a permit, or suggests they call the police. Anti-gun people are big-thinkers, and this is as far as their minds go.

You’ll note that later the punks are seen being friendly with Sue in his apartment. The impression is Sue put his gun up and instead used love. Dunno if the first scene could be written by somebody who might think that looking down the barrel of a gun after doing something VERY stupid can get a person to re-think a few things.

Just thought I’d share because it did seem VERY 90s. By which I mean, very anti-gun and stupid.

Happy Independence Day!

No “Gun Death?” for today, and probably not much for posting.

Go out and have a good time. Still I have two homework assignments for you, my dear readers.

Read this post by Uncle This nonsense didn’t happen overnight, so we won’t fix it any faster, but we must remember it NEEDS fixing. We have built a cage around us in the name of security, but we aren’t anymore secure.

Second if you can, celebrate with an Immigrant. Illegal immigrants are a poison to this country, but the ones who put in the hard work to become legal residents or citizens of this country are what have made it so great! Thank them and then hoist a glass of domestic beer and watch some Chinese fireworks explode. Maybe pop some caps on some domestic firearms because those are the best!

They Know Part III

Seems critters pretty consistently know when the local top predator are toothless. In these case its the humans and hunting regulations. The latest is a photo from Dad.

Good size Hen Turkey and her chicks. Dad said they had NO fear of him. I actually had a pair of Toms run me down in Suburban Mass.

Meanwhile In the fall a few years back The Mrs., Vector, Rockstar, and I went camping and a a flock of turkeys came through the campsite every night. Even with a 12x Zoom lens I couldn’t so much as snap a picture of the bastards. They knew the woods in fall was no time to fuck around.

Portland Maine, and Eastern Mass, No discharge of firearms. I’d still hit the bastards with my truck and eat ’em! 😀

You’re Grounded, Buddy!

Power went out this morning. Wanna know why?

Little dude decided to short the transformer. Knocked power out on my whole street.

I of course did the red-blooded American thing and went outside and poked him with a stick. Oddly enough the wife doesn’t seem to understand that dead animals and fire pits are two things that need CONSTANT poking with sticks, and I’m one of those good people who is willing to shoulder more than my fair share of the labor.

He actually looks pretty good, all things considered. We had a finch do the same thing last year and it had a strip of feathers blown off and a gaping hole in its neck. The squirrel appears to have severe burns on both paws, snout, and a dab on the chest. Not sure if he got a cross-chest arc, or just generated enough heat through electrical resistance that he flash-fried his brain. Either way he likely was dead before he hit the ground.

The power guy had to tinker with our pole as well as the one at the end of the street.

Neighbor was cooking breakfast and she was pissed that her electric stove had gone cold!

RESIST THE POWER!!!!
