That tharr is black pepper mixed with 750 ml of Three Olives vodka. My last batch of Bacon vodka (which was a horrid mixture of success and failure) had a bit too much pepper in it. I’m going to omit pepper entirely from the next batch in hopes to clean up the bacon flavor. That being said the pepper flavor that is imparted to vodka is quite amazing, it is not exactly what say ground pepper tastes like, it seems to have a lot less of the earthy flavors and more of the light vegital flavors, but still with that simmering heat of black pepper.

It was quite tasty and totally killer in Martinis, so I’m gonna make a batch of it an see how it rolls.

I was originally planning to let this batch infuse for two weeks, but look at how dark it is! I’m worried at the end of two weeks I’ll have peppery paint-thinner on my hands. Now my plan is to crack the jar next week and sample it and see if its time to filter.

I must say infusing my own vodka is lots of fun! Had some lychee vodka this evening and its very good.

Can’t wait until this batch is ready!

Belly Sans Fire

Just not feelin’ it tonight. Tossed off that easy Newsweek post, but I have a million good posts rattling around in my head, from the UK knife laws, to foolish Lefty Bloggers, to “Gun Death?” posts.

But I must say, I’m just not feelin’ it, so I think I’ll pour myself an adult beverage and maybe watch some Nazi Zombies

Lost Opportunity

Newsweek sells for $1

I wish I’d known, I’d have paid $5 and sold it for $1,000 to a developer to turn the press where that fishwrap was turned out into condos, or maybe Section 8 Housing!

My Father has a subscription to the magazine, he started giving me his back issues when he finished them. After a few issues I knew the best place for them was in the bottom of my recycling bin.

A somwhat crummy Day

So I got to bed fairly late after cleaning my Mosin M44 from the blogger shoot, as I shoot corrosive ammo through it. Had to get up fairly early so we could catch the train and head into Boston. Rather than work We’d both taken the day off so we could go to Mass General Hospital for Mrs. Weer’d pre-operative tests and meetings.

Some things were a bit bumpy, such as the fact that the paperwork all listed her surgery date as “August 7th” which not only isn’t the correct date…but a Saturday. The surgeon is on vacation right now and will return at the end of the week where we can square all that away, but it did worry the Mrs. a good bit. She gave blood and urine, the pee part went well, blood, not-so-hot. To say the Mrs. has shitty veins for needle sticks is putting it lightly. So she got poked and prodded, but yielded no red-stuff. She was advised to go through the meetings have lunch and drink lots of water, and then return.

We meet with the Nurse Practitioner who would be working directly under her Anesthesiologist and they went over the basics of the procedure and recovery. The NP was quite a card, and she worked the room like a stand-up comic to keep the mood light. Also I was quite surprised that in an un-related topic (We were talking about patient ID numbers, and photo ID) she mentioned, among a long list of IDs, that she had a gun permit. Since this was about the Mrs. Epilepsy surgery, I didn’t feel it proper to drop a subtle hint. Since land where one can legally shoot on is rare the general gunnie secret handshake around here is “What club are you a member of?”. Still I was amused that somebody would say “I have a gun permit” to a group of people she had only met. I likened it to saying “I’m Gay” in a more Christian-Centered Red-State.

During this meeting the Mrs. had a small seizure, so small that if I hadn’t told her she probably wouldn’t have noticed it. This was not big deal, its what we have right now, and why we were in the hospital, it was also not surprising given how nervous the wife was getting with all this talk of needles, incisions, and head-shaving. Also the Nurse mentioned an amnesiac effect that might happen for the recovery period just because of stress to the brain. Be interesting to see if that’s a reality.

We then met with a floor nurse just to talk about further medical records, health care proxy, and at-home recovery.

Then it was off to lunch at Boston Beer Works a good place, I recommend! Burgers and lots of water were had to better the blood-drawing. Then back to the Hospital.

On the way back the Mrs. said “Uh-Oh, something isn’t right…”

I suspected it was another seizure, tho this kind isn’t like the others. Normally she just blanks out for 30-60 seconds, then is a bit confused for a few minuets, and sometimes gets grouchy or sleepy afterwords. This kind there is never a loss of consciousness but she gets very confused, often says the wrong words when talking, and often hears wrong words when listening. Also she tires to explain concepts or ideas that as far as we can tell don’t exist, and therefore can’t be explained or figured out. This kind can last for hours.

So back to the hospital for the blood drawing, there was some communication difficulties due to the seizure, but the staff was understanding and helpful. A vein was struck and blood was collected, so we moved on to the EEG floor where we had an appointment with a researcher who is doing a study on brain resection and memory. While in the waiting room the Mrs. attempted to read a magazine and found it to be too difficult, I suggested she listen to music and that quickly put her to sleep.

When the researcher arrived we told her the story, and the Mrs. Confirmed that the short nap wasn’t enough to stop the seizure, so we’ll either have to reschedule or drop out of the study.

So off to home, which was a tough journey for the Mrs., as she was confused, and frustrated by the seizure and now starting to get VERY tired…as was I because of my busy weekend. Home was nap time for both of us. After my nap I decided to clean the guns from the blogger shoot. I did most of the handguns, when cleaning my Jennings J-22 I lost the main spring across the room. I found the retention plug, but no spring. Searching all over made me quite grouchy so after that I decided it was time call it quits for the night, and join the Mrs. watching movies.

So it was a rough day, but we’re moving forward with surgery and are still quite happy with the hospital.

As for a Gunnie Bleg, does anybody know where I can buy a replacement spring for the J-22? I actually remember reading somewhere of somebody who fashioned a mainspring out of the spring from a ballpoint pen. I don’t see why that might not work.

Any help?

Oh and thanks for all your concern about the Mrs. We both greatly appreciate it!

Back

Got back from the NE Blogger shoot after dark, cleaned the Mosin Nagant I brought as that was the only gun I shot with corrosive ammunition hopped in the shower and went to bed.

Check the usual Northeast Types to see what they have for updates, also those of you I was hanging out with feel free to email and post pictures.

I’ll be spending the better part of the day in the hospital as the Mrs. is going through her pre-operative tests and meetings for her surgery at the end of this month, so blogging should be light.

I brought my camera, and just as I suspected I didn’t take a single picture during the whole shoot. When surrounded by that many cool people with cool guns, the last thing on my mind is the shutter button.

Still Jay’s and I were talking getting a picture exchange so we can all share the love.

Ready To Rock

Got just about everything packed and ready for the Blogger Shoot and of course like a total dork I slept like crap. Seemed to be a combination of excitement, nerves (don’t ask, I have no excuse), and some minor intestinal issues (TMI!!!)

So I called it quits around 4:30 and started hitting the caffeine. In a bit I’ll load everything into the truck and head up to Jay’s where we’ll consolidate and take “THE” Dodge up to the top seekrit range.

I’m excited about the surprises that have only been hinted at!

Huh?

Sorry Doubletapper but that gun just looks plain goofy

As you can tell I’m going through my youtube subscriptions. Man tho the mile-high scope, and the bipod all dangling off an M4 just seems goofy to me. I mean don’t people like M4s because they’re light and handy? If you’re gonna bulk it up with all that stuff, why not do it on a full-size M16/AR-15 and take good advantage of the longer barrel to improve the ballistics of the 5.56x45mm.

Just sayin’

Another Good Video

Some people seem edgy about carrying a single-action gun like the M1911 “Cocked-and-locked” (meaning a round in the chamber, the hammer cocked, and the thumb safety engaged) but besides that thumb safety a modern 1911 is still VERY safe to carry in this condition.

My S&W1911s are similar to this one only the Series 80 colt uses a mechanism attached to the trigger to deactivate the firing pin block, my Smiths (and newer kimbers for that matter) use one that works off the grip safety. IMHO how this safety is activated is unimportant as it serves as a drop-safety. Some say it isn’t really nessisary as the 1911 needs to be dropped directly on the muzzle and hard enough to overcome the firing pin spring. That seems a bit unlikely in the course of events, but I still prefer a gun with a drop safety, and since some of the series 80 design can mess with the crisp single-action trigger pull of the 1911, I prefer the smith/kimber style.

Also Some gun makers use a lightweight firing pin (usually titanium) and a heavier than normal recoil spring, so the energy of the gun being dropped will never cause enough inertia to dimple a primer. I dunno, I’d just prefer a gun without all that jazz at all, to something like that, but is IS a good and effective design.

Another Gut-Turner

Sent to me by Bob S. who was just as disgusted.

A Southern California man has been sentenced to death for the torture and murder of a 16-year-old runaway girl who was stabbed more than 130 times and left in a burning home.

Sad and horrible cases that detail the brutality of man, and destroy the notion that banning X-Tool will somehow stop Y-Crime.

I hope that you all are letting people know who engage in the gun debate about the “Gun Death?” category here.

Also I’d like to thank my loyal readers who send these stories to me, you’ve helped me compile a large amount of stories in such a short time.

Let’s all hope it does some good.
