Happy Coelacanth Day!

Too Cool!

Robin Stobbs, a coelacanth researcher in South Africa, informed me that an individual of the Indonesian coelacanth was filmed at the depth of 170 m, 17, at 8:30 am on May 30, 2006, off shore Buol, about 350 km west from Manado, Sulawesi Island, with a ROV operated by the Aquamarine Fukushima Survey team. This town is only a few miles (east) from where the Jago team saw two coelacanths in a cave near ToliToli. Two other coelacanths were seen on May 31, 2006, at Buol.

One of the reasons why I thought Marine Biology was one of the coolest fields out there. The ocean is so big, and so difficult to explore that there are HUGE things that people didn’t even realize were still around.

What’s really neat is the Fossil record Coelacanths were all small, and the ones alive today are HUGE. Neat stuff

Thanks Laura for tippin’ me off!

Take a Moment

To remember those who made the ultimate sacrifice, on this Memorial Day.

Without human sacrifice and bravery, we would have nothing.

“Gun Death” Knife and Vet

A sad tale.

There was never a question of who killed James Stropas, a decorated Army sergeant and Iraq war veteran.

Sean Burton did it.

He stabbed Stropas more than 70 times in the parking lot of a Delaware County shopping center with an 8-inch butcher knife.

What a waste. Now I ask all who use the metric of “Gun Death”: would this be worse if he had used a gun vs. the Butcher Knife?

Afternoon Irony

Just thought I’d share. The USS Constitution is legally a Federal Building, so the carrying of firearms is a federal felony on board. Ironic given its namesake.

Thankfully the neighboring museum and the USS Cassin Young are just National Parks, so I had plenty to do.

Good times.

Aquarium Blogging: Now in Smell-o-Vision

Thought I’d share some sights and smells of the New England Aquarium

First one of the seals crashed out after the show.

He smelled like most seals, which, if haven’t smelled seal is essentially Wet dog, Body Odor, and dead fish.

The penguins are always a favorite :

They of course smell like poop and dead fish.

And my favorite

And they’re in a tank so you can’t smell them, but even out of the water they don’t smell like much at all.

“Gun Death” Shaken Baby

An all to common non-gun fatality.

COON RAPIDS, Minn. – A 5-month-old baby girl from Coon Rapids has died after spending nearly a week on life support. The girl was taken to the hospital on May 11 with bleeding on her brain consistent with being shaken. She died around 11:30 p.m. Sunday night.

The girl’s father, 25-year-old Joshua Vanhoutan, was charged last week with one count of first-degree assault and two counts of malicious punishment of a child.

Not a lot to say about this. I will point out that those who use the metric “Gun Death” seem to think things will be better if more laws are passed.

I’ll note it is currently illegal to violently shake a baby. Did that law save any lives here?

Our Own Police State

We all have read about this case

Full Swat Video Here. The man was a Marine Veteran, had no criminal record, and this para-military raid uncovered no contraband. Furthermore the Marine did NOT fire upon the police with his own weapon, and was found dead with the safety still engaged on his rifle.

In these parts the same thing can happen here. An FBI SWAT raid on Child Porn charges.

CHILD PORN! Seriously, kiddie porn is bad news, but its hardly easy to get rid of, especially when on a computer (deleted files need to be overwritten multiple times to be unrecoverable), and while creepy, kiddie porn offenders tend not to be armed and fortified for raids.

Jack Booted Thugs! This needs to stop!

“Gun Death” Slippery Slope

“We’re Not Going To Take Your Guns” “Gun Bans are Off The Table”, “I’m not coming for your guns”, is the big lie of the anti-rights types. Of course if you have any sense you know they ARE coming for your guns! Hell just look as far back as yesterday. That Paratrooper FAL is the gun I want. It is now illegal here because it meets the criteria as an “Assault Weapon” in the State of Massachusetts (as it did during the Federal Ban) but my current FAL which has a few concessions is essentially the same gun. I’ll note that the magazines for this gun need to be made pre-1994 to be legal as well. And anybody who does any high-round shooting knows that magazines are consumable parts.

I’m a handgun shooter, and a big advocate of carrying for self defense. There are SO many good carry guns, as well as neat novelty guns I’d love to had…but they are not legal to buy in Massachusetts!
Yep want a ubiquitous Glock 19, probably one of the most popular carry guns in the nation? Hope you can find a used one in good shape, because you can’t buy them new here! Wanna drink the Kool-Aid on the S&W M&P9? You can buy the guns, but you’ll only be able to stuff 10 round magazines into that 17 round well until the law changes.

Sorry assholes you already CAME for my guns! But in case you don’t believe me now, have a read of this Tweet!

FACT: Most firearm-related deaths in Canada are caused by rifles or shotguns.

First up they use “Gun Death” meaning they feel the need to discount all other forms of death (again click the link to read pages and pages of deaths that these jerks don’t think are worth your time) and of course ban long guns. And given that its Canada that has banned what the antis consider “Assault Weapons” (can’t buy an AR-15 in Canada) these are your standard-issue “Sporting Guns”, these are your bench-rest rifles, your duck guns, your trap and skeet guns, your deer rifle, your afternoon paper-puncher.

Their solution: REGISTRATION! (PDF). Note that these “Gun Deaths” are happening under the Canadian Long-Gun Registry. So you’re claiming we need to keep the laws the same because long-guns cause “Gun Death”? But you aren’t looking to ban guns. But if guns cause “Gun Death” and “Gun Death” is a relevant metric, wouldn’t banning guns be the smart thing to do?

Their actions betray their motives. Of course here in America we have many of our “Gun Deaths” because of handguns. Why? Because it isn’t a colossal pain in the ass to BUY a handgun in America. Does this mean we need to make handguns harder to buy? Well yeah if “Gun Death” was relevant, and we didn’t have things like armed self-defense!

And of course they don’t stop, have a look at the knife laws and the individual liberties in the UK!

Again they are anti-freedom, not just anti-gun, and they WILL not stop. Don’t give an inch!

“Gun Death” Chainsaw

OK evil, bad, horrific, but you got to give him points for style.

A 32-year-old Houston man butchered his best friend with a chainsaw and stashed his body parts in a trash bag under an abandoned house, police said.

And what would case a 32 year old man to chop up his “best friend” with a chainsaw?

Neighbors on the crime-ridden block said the two had been arguing recently and that Morin had accused Thomas of stealing money and drugs from him.

The Anti-Freedom nuts seem to claim that somehow owning guns promote violence, and “Gun Death”, but frankly if you want to live longer #1: Don’t Do or sell Illegal Drugs, and #2. Don’t assosiate with others who do or sell illegal drugs.

Because these drugs are illegal, all of its sale is done though the black market, which is mostly the gangs. Maybe when these drugs are legal such problems will no longer occur, its not like you see people getting machine-gunned over booze these days.

The saddest paragraph was this:

Neighbors said the two had been pals for more than 20 years and used to spend nights drinking, talking and playing Scrabble in front of the their home.

These two guys met when they were REALLY young, and had been friends for most their lives. Also Scabble is hardly a game played by illiterate street thugs. These are both wasted lives.

We need to work on the root of this problem, and guess what? It isn’t “Gun Death”!
